we've had a lot of people volunteer to help out with the new board!! Thank you! Also, should we make this board a member only board, where you have to log-in to view/post? If yes, should we wait a few more days/week before we switch? I just want us to feel comfortable posting like we did at ss. There is an option when you log on, you can log on forever. I know even though you can't directly google this site... since it is open right now i feel a little shy about posting pics and such... thanks for your input!!

I can't help moderate because I'm sporadically on and off the boards but my thought for the public/private thing is that I think a combination of both might be ideal. Maybe have 95% of the board public but have one forum for members only, who have to apply to be accepted. That forum would be for super sensitive posts only. But I think the public part of the board is very important because a lot of people lurk and presumably benefit but never get the guts to post. I think it would be a shame to cut those people off. But on the other hand I've always thought it would be nice if there was a private piece of the board for members who are concerned about posting for the whole world to see.

Is it possible to leave some sections of the boards open for public reading and make things like byways and photos members-only? I understand the urge to keep things private to the group, but most of us (almost all?) lurked and read for a while before we decided to join. If there was nothing to read and recognize ourselves in, or read and be inspired by, we'd get no new members. While we're a sterling bunch, we need new people, too, and should make it possible for them to find out what this place is about and get comfortable before they commit to join us.
Edited to add: margaret, we're thinking alike; you posted while I was writing.

I know I was fairly new on the other board, but I would be glad to help mod. I'm an admin for a local message board, so I do have some familiarity with the technical side of things. SS was such a great help for improving my home, I would love to be able to give back and help out this message board.
I think it would be a great idea to make it a member only board. Or maybe have just an intro/about this board forum and post visible to unregistered readers. I know that I'm a bit shy about posting pics, in fact went back and deleted the ones I posted on the old board while I still had the chance to do some. For me, my squalor is very personal and something I'm working hard to overcome. I even have a completely different username here than I do on my "usual" message boards, out of some fear that someone will recognize me and my personal details and learn of my struggles.

I think it would be fantastic if we could keep some of it private (especially photos...you don't know how many times I have taken pictures but just could not post them out of fear that my mother, kids teachers, PTA ..you get the picture...would see them) Thank you SO MUCH Missy for getting this together...I wish I had the "skills" to help moderate, but I just figured out how to use different fonts...NOT TOO COMPUER SAVVY

I'd rather it be member-only except for maybe a Getting to Know TOSAAT forum where there are articles on squalor, challenge announcements, etc. I was a mod for another site for a few years, so if you need someone, feel free to contact me. I ran two themed chats a week as well as contests on the forums. Some really flopped, but it was fun and would help keep me motivated.

hypatia and metamorpha, I changed you over to admin. Just be careful any time you "delete" something Look around and see what's available. Most things can be fixed, so don't worry about it. If you want to create a new skin (the background and all colors used in the forum) go right ahead! We can creat a bunch of skins and choose them, switch them, etc. Be sure to name the new skin. you can delete/change calendar items, posts, etc if anyone is having troubles with it. i also changed photos and by-ways to members only. i can add another catagory, and have that be public, and make the main and listzilla also private. i'll wait and see if anyone else chimes in and maybe i will do a poll. but for now, photos and by-ways are private.

A Q to admins/moderators: is there a way to keep the sticky posts for public view and all other entries on board for members only? or is it the entire board that has to go one way or another? if the latter then there could be a section where these sticky notices are kept, ( copied over if deemed important) esp for those Q's and A's that concern all or explain something to all.
Will all the important info gathered by Pigpen in the past years, i.e. links, hints and such be copied over for all newcomers? ( before the old site gets wiped)

each section is call a 'board' on here, so i can create a board for public view, and keep all links, hints, etc from ss on the public viewable board. i can also make an announcement thread, and that will be stickied to all 'boards', public or private. if someone would like to volunteer to copy/paste all the links/hints, that would be awesome. i probably wouldnt get to it for a little bit.

This thread poses a tough question. I know that I have sometimes self-edited in order to conceal information that I thought "someone who knew me" might recognize. And I definitely have not posted pictures because of that same fear (especially my landlords!) even though I know that I could take pictures that obscured any really unique aspects of my home...
That being said, I think we should remain mostly public. I lurked for so long before I joined and while lurking I learned so much. The steps for my own slow growth into acceptance and real change were begun while I was lurking and discovering that other people were, currently and in the past, struggling with the same things I was.
For instance others: - Were doing frantic "stash and dashes" before company came over (also learned the term "stash and dash") - Couldn't let their children's friends over - Had a practically unusable kitchen... and much much more
I don't think I would have felt comfortable joining without being able to view the posts and discussions for months first. The information on the static site was still super-valuable, but it doesn't take the place of the community.
I would vote for a mostly public board (even byways and listzilla - listzilla was an eyeopener to me) with some portion of it just for members. I guess I would vote for the picture part to be members only, but part of that is selfish because I'm paranoid. I know that viewing the pictures of those less paranoid has been a real hep to me.
Also, I could volunteer to help with the copy and pasting from the old site. Although I probably won't be able to do anything until the weekend. And if it entails anything more than just cutting or pasting I'll need some hand-holding. I'm assuming you are referring to all of the stuff on the main board and all of the information around things like "demand-resistance" etc.? Just take the time to manually go through and copy things and paste them on a portion of this board? (If I've totally missed the boat on what this entails, let me know. I have no ego when it comes to computer stuff!)

Thanks, Missy. I'll try not to screw anything up. Let me know if there is something in particular you need worked on. notc, you brought up a great point. I joined at SS and then lurked but I bet there are a lot of people who just read and never signed up. (I guess someone else made that point too, but I was too tired to read straight. )

I think having the Pictures forum as private/registered members only is a good compromise. That way we can feel a bit better about posting pictures knowing that anyone who stumbles across the forum won't be able to view them. (Though, of course, we should all make sure we continue to use common sense about posting any personal information!)
How does everyone feel about having non-registered members post? On the other board, non-members could read but not post. As it is now, non-members can post on all the boards except for pictures. (I'm mainly talking about the boards other than Technical Help, that way if a member needs to post there for help without being logged in.)

Hi, I like the idea that non-members can read, but you have to be member to post sounds good to me. Thanks for all of you.

Hi all;
I like the idea also that non members cannot post.
As for pictures, I will say that it was reading Kimmy's story and viewing her pictures that motivated me to join on SS and motivated me to start de-squaloring. If I'd just read her story alone I don't think it would have had quite the same impact... but seeing the pics, and knowing someone out there had rooms "just as bad" or even worse than mine!? That was a huge, indescribable relief. Then seeing the after pics.... what inspiration!! I joined *after* that.
So I have an idea: how about we keep photo areas private BUT we have a section, either a sticky or a long-term thread where we can post our stories with or without pics and leave that section viewable to guests. This way if one of us does feel comfy posting a story with pics or even just A pic in hopes that it will help some lurker, it will be our choice.

I like that idea a lot chronic, and I'm really thankful hypatia brought up the question of non-registered people posting. I think that opens us up to harassment by people who just want to drop by with their nasty 2 cents and take off. But that's just my opinion.
