Wow, 50+ bags gone!! That's great. Yes, there is more to go, but you don't have to deal with those 50 bags ever again. Keep tossing! Each thing that goes out is gone forever, woohoo!! You've made a great start. You are on your way to an uncluttered life. Just keep going!!

Hello and welcome - I think you have come to the right place. I am a newcomer here but I have read a lot of the old posts and am finding lots of good advice. Sometimes just a little tidbit in a posting helps me to see all of this MESS in a different way. I am teary-eyed just thinking about how desperate I have become, ("I can't live like this anymore", oh yes) but I am beginning to have hope again.
You are on the right track and have made a fantastic start (50 bags!! W O W !). I think part of the key to making this happen is persistence. I used to do endurance races and I remember the advice someone once gave me: "You don't have to go fast, all you have to do is keep going. If you just keep going, sooner or later you will come to the end." (which for us means "maintenance").
Don't give up. You have a new life ahead of you.

Congratulations on your accomplishment, you should give yourself a serious pat on the back for what you have done.
Think about it. With 50 bags of trash you have made the correct decision literally hundreds, possibly thousands of times. I don't need this, I don't need that, on and on.
In my own case, I am literally paralyzed when making the decision to throw something out, but every time I make that decision, it's easier the next time.
You are well on your way to recovery, literally clearing and repaving the path as you go. You mention that you have 12 years of accumulation, it won't get done in a day, but it will get done, one bag at a time!
I admire your courage to take action and reclaim what is rightfully yours, your life. Way to go!
Postcard from the Edge,

Wow, 50 bags-- a great job!! As someone just said those are 50 bags you will never have deal with again. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and one item at a time in a bag.

hi! thank you all for the kind responses! the only way i was able to fill those 50+ bags was to just "close my eyes" so to speak and just throw stuff in them without stopping to think about it. i only keep my families clothing , shoes and very personal belongings. the sellable stuff i put on ebay or took to the swapmeet and made some money! the rest, i didnt care what it was, it went in the bags! i threw everything in my kitchen away, cleaned it with the help of my daughter and bought new pans , dishes, utensils and a few small appliances. only things we really needed. i will keep going one bag at a time, 1 day at a time. thank you , you have all really inspired me!

Welcome, jgarcia71 ! on the bags out! Remember that a person who has to lose 100 lbs., and the person who has to lose only 10 lbs., after losing 5 each, they have accomplished the same thing! Yes, for one it will show, for the other it won't show yet, but they both did it. Same with the bags. It may not show yet, you may still feel overwhelmed, but you did it! This site can help you stay motivated without crashing and burning. It sounds like you have found a method that works well for you, so keep at it, slow and steady. messymimi

Welcome to the board!! ghettofabulous said, "You mention that you have 12 years of accumulation, it won't get done in a day, but it will get done, one bag at a time!" I keep telling myself this and try to keep plugging along. I have had pretty good luck maintaining the work that I have finished, but it is tough to continue the de-cluttering process. Every little tiny thing that I do makes me feel so much better, even if it is picking up one piece of trash or clutter and dealing with it. This place is a life-saver and I cannot tell you how much it has helped me. Stick with us and you WILL accomplish what you desire!!
