I've been having a hard time getting started with the landlord/plumber issue I posted a few days ago. I finally realized why. I have no place to put my garbage out of the house, until next week. And I'm going to have a lot of bags. I live in a rear house about 30 ft behind the front one, the yard is out of the question. The really bad smelly ones are all ready in my garbage can outside, which is next to the alley and I can't pile any more on, or else I can't get to my house. Next week I can make trips to the dump, it's closed for the remainder of the week. Normally I'd store them in the empty basement but both the landlord and plumber will be down there working.
Any suggestions?I have a fairly large house. Help I'm stuck.
best, artsy

Can you place them directly behind or to the side of your house , just temporarily?

Thanks Vivre,
But my the back of my house is flush with the alley and the side, has about a 3 1/2 foot clearance, which is how I get into the house. My front yard is literally my neighbors back yard. I know, it's a strange layout. It's and old neighborhood and my house are referred to as Polish flats, it similar to row houses.

If it's truly short term... and not smelly... put them under tables and throw on tablecloths or sheets that reach the floor. Put a bouquet of flowers or pretty weeds/wildflowers on top, and it will look like you "meant it".
If you don't have tables, position two boxes with a space of a foot or two between them. Add another two boxes on top of the first. Put a few bags between them on the floor, and then throw a tablecloth over everything. The boxes will lend structure to your "draping". Or you can do a wall of boxes, with a wall of garbage behind them, again, covered with a sheet.
If this garbage is at all smelly, you're going to have to face it, they probably will smell it. Unless you double and triple bag it... and for that amount of trouble (cost of many good quality garbage bags), maybe you can just arrange for someone to take it to the dump for you.
Just don't forget that you put the garbage there, if you decide to hide it!!!

i'd probably put them anywhere in the house that you aren't actively working on or having repairs done, not even hide them, and make one GIGANTOR cardboard sign that says, "Reaching my goals one bag at a time. Garbage Pick Up xx.xx.xx" it's a mess and a hassle right now, but one i'd be hella proud of edited to add- I'm just saying it's not something to be ashamed of.. you're now among the ranks of home owners doing home reno and that generates a ton of garbage, even the tidiest people have that issue with remods and renos. and you're digging out of squalor now, not hiding in it... It seems like somethin' to be proud of, eh:)

Is there a possibility of sneaking bags out early in the morning and dumping them with other people's trash? You'll feel better if you can get everything smelly out of the house. I'd be inclined to be ruthless about it and dump stuff secretly in any convenient spot

Just don't dump it at my place . I have someone who often dumps their garbage in front of my house, sometime in the wee hours of morn. In the morning, when I go to take my own garbage to the curb, I see it sitting there, and then my 3-bag limit is already used up. Quite annoying!

Thanks mellowyellow, djolly, and ivorytower! All of those thought crossed my mind, which makes me strangely feel better, tee hee. Like minds think alike. I was in the hardware store getting some supplies and my mom called, she had another suggestion of putting some of it out on my two front porches, and then covering the bags with tarps, which luckily I was in the store to purchase, and she's a cleany. So I'm going to implement all of your suggestions, and djolly you really put the bags into perspective for me, he wants to see progress. If he asks , I'll be honest. The tarps will make me feel less guilty , so the neighbors don't have to look at trash, mellowyellow they had boxes for me to take at the store, and i promise no dumping by you . Ivorytower, I CAN sneak out and use two abandoned houses garbage bins, if they aren't full already. They are duplexes so there a total of 4 cans, woo hoo. I didn't even think of those cans, that won't make anyone mad. Thanks all!! I feel like a squirrel hiding and scattering my nuts only it's trash. You gotta do, what you gotta do! best, artsy

Yeah, Artsy.. I have to say, a "clutterer's worst nightmare" is having one's garbage space used up by another "secret messy". You sound very positive and proactive. I think you are attacking the situation well. Sending you good vibes and lots of strength and patience...

I have problems with getting the garbage taken off too, hubby takes it usually when it is so full it is hopeless, (he works a lot of overtime and also helps our son with his house so hubby has no spare time) we have two garbage cans outside. So sometimes, since I know it going to sit awhile I take steps to minimize the smell from the very beginning. I use ziploc bags usually save the old ones that are not smelly and put old fruit or any type of food or wrappings in them and seal them, I also use jars that I have emptied and will put grease or food in them and tighten the lid. Doing these small things will for the most part keep the smell down and if that does not work I double bag the garbage. But even your best tries sometimes you have a mess, unbeknownst to me the garbage bag leaked and I did not realize and it and put a clean garbage bag over top of it and when I took out the garbage next time there were maggots on my arm, I freaked.
