Talk about procrastination, I pulled an all nighter and I'm moving slower and slower, the plumber will be here at 8:30, and my landlord at 11:00. I am a night owl, but talk about the consequences of squalor, this is one!! I'm still afraid I won't be able to finish, and I'm not touching a lot of rooms. My house has 8 rooms and I'm working on three, will be touching up two more. I'm rambling due to fatigue. I'm going to be checking back a bit this morning. oh yeah all of my fruit flies and flies are awakening..... best, artsy

Hey artsygal,
Your landlord seemed like a reasonable guy--I'm sure he will be pleased to see all the progress you have made this week. I doubt he expects perfection on the first go-round! I think he knows you are committed to getting this done, and I'm betting he'll be happy to give you the time you need to reach your goals.
Best of luck--let us know how things go!

Thank you heylady1, moggyfan, and annie okie! You were both right on. He was kind and helpful, even with my fruit fly colony. I was mortified by the fact that I hadn't vacuumed, it wasn't working, and he fixed it! He was impressed by my progress and didn't nick pick at all. Which reinforces the fact that I'm the one hardest on myself, I am my own worst critic. For me to heal, I need to recognize that I need to be as gentle with myself as I am with others. Yes I got A LOT of cleaning done, but more importantly, I felt first hand (for days) how hard I am on myself, and a door has opened up for me to grow. I am very grateful. best, artsy <------- giving myself a hug

Artsy, a landlord that fixes ?!? Awesome.
You've gotten a start. Now keep going. And it is certainly a good thing to ease up on ourselves during the process of creating new household habits.

Artsy!l I'm so pleased to hear that it all went well. You are well on your way to a cleaner, more serene environment. You will get there, by introducing new routines one by one. Congrats! My feeling remains that he's either "been there, done that" or been very close to someone who has. Or, maybe, he's just a saint, !

Here's an inexpensive, easy way to get rid of fruit flies: Put a cup and a half or so of water into a shallow bowl. Add 1/4 C. of vinegar and 2 Tbsps. of sugar. Mix until the sugar dissolves. Drop TWO DROPS of dishwashing liquid to the top of the mixture. DO NOT STIR.
Leave this out on a counter. The fruit flies will be attracted to the vinegar and sugar mixture, thinking that it is over-ripe fruit. The dish soap will make it so that they cannot "walk on the water."
As the dish fills up with dead fruit flies, dump out the solution, and start over with a new one.
Be sure to get rid of any over-ripe fruit or vegetables that might be lying around. If you don't, the fruit flies will go to them, rather than to the vinegar-sugar solution.
This little trick REALLY works!
Good luck to you.

I forgot to mention that you should use cider vinegar, rather than white vinegar.

Thanks to all for your support!!!!
I couldn't of asked for better in this stressful situation. The landlord, plumber, electrician, and a contractor will all be coming back for repairs and I'm okay with that. Did I just write that? This situation has really given me a kickstart. I've lived alone for the past 6 yrs, and because of my squalor, I rarely have people over. It gets lonely. Now that I know people will be coming back, it's kind of exciting to keep plugging away. It has been hard to keep my house maintained when nobody sees it but me <------ I have to work on that one, baby steps. Plus I'm really excited to have a fully functioning kitchen. I've become too accustomed to not having one.
Thanks arid on the fruit fly advice. I once heard somewhere about vinegar helping, so a few years ago, I put out bowls of just vinegar. My house turned into a fruit fly extravaganza!!! It was pretty funny .
best, artsy
