Up until this year, for at least the last 3-4 years, school evenings have always been a hassle at my house. With the mess that I let my home fall into, there was no place to do homework, etc. The boys would literally sit on the floor or on the couch to do it....TV blaring...
Well, last night, after supper and Cub Scouts, my younger one sat down to finish his homework. I sat with him for some of the time and helped when needed. In between I would do little things. My older son sat down and I quizzed him for a test. WE WERE ALL SITTING TOGETHER AT THE KITCHEN TABLE STUDYING AND WORKING! Then later younger son had a tricky (for fun) math problem that we all worked on.....and older son was mockingly quizzing me on my Algebra knowledge....and all the while I was folding laundry and just playing along. I don't know why these small things made me so happy. My living room is still a mess, but slowly getting picked up. But having this time with my boys made me realize that having at least part of my home usable, i.e. the kitchen table NOT piled with junk, can make life a little more pleasant. We all went to bed with (tired) smiles on our faces.
I just thought I would share this little moment from my life.

When I stayed at home full time I use to have a homework hour. I would help the boys with thier home work or if they had none we would read togeather. I really enjoyed that time with them and I think they enjoyed it too. Now that I work odd hours I am not always home to enforce the homework hour, they do not do it on their own. When I am home I am tired and do not want to fight with them.
Our house conditions got worse when I started working full time. The boys do not help, or clean up after themseves. I think they get as overwhelmed as I do!
As a family we have those little "happy" moment often! Yesterday I cleanned off my kitchen table. I have not seen the top of it for months. I bought some flower home and placed them on the top of the table. Ds#2 said lets turn off the tv and eat dinner at the table as a family tonight. To bad that I had to run off to work.

How sweet, and just think. . . your kids will remember this day, too! I remember one Friday night, I was about 14, feeling very lonely, watching "The Man From UNCLE" and my mother made me french fries. You just built a Family Memory!

Annieokie, what a peaceful scene! It feels good to actually be enjoying those things we WISH for, that squalor keeps us from having. You are an inspiration!
Keep up the great work!

Thank you all for the kind comments. I know this sounds silly, but I have been hoping my sons haven't lost all respect for me. I hope they can see the progress and how each little step makes a small difference in our home lives.

Thought I would share another moment.... Last night after supper, homework and shower. I told my younger son to get ready for bed and mentioned that he needed to put away the train set he had set up in his bedroom. I was shocked and very happy when I peeked in to say "Time for bed!" and he had picked up the entire set, put it in the storage tub he keeps it in and put it back where it belongs. He had even gotten his homework and binder ready to go for this a.m. THEN....he thanked me again for getting his room cleaned up for him. I told him I appreciated the work he has been doing to keep it neat. I was so proud.
