I, too, am not a FlyLady fan. There is more than one way to be squalor-free, which she won't recognize in her schtick because then her schtick wouldn't be her schtick. She's found a good thing that works for a lot of people, but I'm not comfortable with some of her unnecessary scoldings, nor am I comfortable with her perkiness. I'm not perky; I'm more witty/sarcastic. However, one thing I did want to mention for anyone interested is that on Yahoo, there's an "offshoot" of the idea, a group called Fly Lady Clutter Busters. They do follow her philosophy (blech), but they post only hints, not any other e-clutter, personal comments, stories, God breezes, purple puddles, pink lizards and green rutabagas (sorry, I can't resist editorial color comments). And I've found some of the hints to be really good, so I do subscribe to that. You can search for it at yahoogroups.com.

paperpiler,
I'm more along the lines of sarcastic, also. And another thing that bugs me is all the products she sells. Does anyone know if they are any good. If I'm being charitable, I think that it's a good idea to give people who are clueless about cleaning a place to buy all the stuff they need; the more cynical side of me thinks it's a big money grubbing rip off.

As far as the shoe issue goes, you can't win. Shoes may track outside dirt in, but if you go barefoot, you leave oils and dead skin cells on floor. Socks are slippery. Slippers would work, as would houseshoes. However, this then requires that you have slippers in sizes to accommodate all guests (and that the guests are willing to accommodate you), or that you warn the guests to bring houseshoes when they come.
People have the right to set the rules for their own home. But that means that they need to figure out how those rules can be followed easily.
For me... If I could live in sandals year round, I would. I can't, so I don't, but I wear sandals all the time in the summer, and as house shoes in the winter.
Oddly enough, the lack of laces on the sandals doesn't make me any less effective at cleaning. (I'm toying with the idea of wearing clogs for cooking, though, if I can find some wide enough.)
And I'd shined my sink many a time before I ever heard of Flylady. Never inspired me to do anything but turn off the light and leave the kitchen.
You have to take what works for you and leave the rest. And if that means creating your own system... Go for it! Start it here, if you want. Call it the "Perk Off" System, ("All of the hints, none of the sugar!") and come up with routines and challenges and inspirations that work for you.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe I need to check the Naughty Word list for internal consistency.

When I had kids, I had to learn to wear shoes in the house. Otherwise, the kids stomp on my feet all the time .
This thread is hilarious. I found her "modify my routines to fit your life" attitude helpful, but sometimes she is just too cheerful for words.

Oh, I don't go barefoot for reasons of cleanliness -- I do it for comfort. I don't mind if others wear shoes in my house, but as for myself, I go barefoot unless it's simply too cold to stand it, in which case I wear socks. My feet are as important a sensing device as my hands, & as clumsy as I am, I need all the help I can get!

If I'm wearing shoes in my house, then it's because I'm tired of wondering what I stepped in "mooooooom, the kitty got sick on the stairs!" or tired of wiping crap off my feet after I walk through my kitchen or dining room.
Flylady has never been to my house. Having floors clean enough for me to go barefoot is a post-worthy accomplishment!

Which are the same reasons I don't go barefoot. Which just goes to show that there's no such thing as one-size-fits-all in these things.

It was a love/hate thing for me.. I liked cleaning out and shining my sink every day. I used to live with days of dishes that would sit and sit, and sometimes really gross mixtures would develop... I have to admit that to this day, I still scrub and wipe down my sink every single day. No, I don't use that huge, lengthy process... but it is always clean. I also liked the idea of dividing the house into sections. It really was the only way for me to deal with the huge mess that my house used to have. If I had to think of everything together, I would never have started at all. I liked the 27 Boogie thing... but hated the sweetsie name for it. It helped me a lot in the beginning when I had to literally climb over the piles in my bedroom, in order to get to my bed. The shoe thing. Dumb dumb dumb. I am almost always barefoot. Even in class, if I am at my desk, I often will secretly slide my shoes off. At home, I realize though, that if I am barefoot and something spills (flour, sauce, water, etc.), it is easy for me to track it to other rooms. If I am wearing flip flops or shoes, it seems easier to contain the mess to the area of spillage. Particularly if I spill something like cheerios or nuts... They stick to my bare feet... but just flick off of shoes. Can you tell I spill things a lot??? I totally and completely hated the onslaught of emails. Particularly since they were directed to people who worked at home, or who had access to their home throughout the day, rather than me, working fulltime away from home. I HATED the stupid names for things, especially the Purple Puddles nonsense. I hated the testimonials that people would write. I hated the Wand thing... and Control Journal... Though the idea of a book that organizes my jobs was great! I did have a Control Journal for a while, but I refused to call it that... I don't want to have a book that controls me... I want to BE in Control. Semantics.. but it just sounded negative. But.... I still shine my sink... every single day... And that.. my friends.. counts for an awful lot on some days.

So according to FlyLady you have to wear shoes to be clean? WHOO-HOO! I wear flip flops ALL the time, it must mean I'm clean......I shall walk by the ball of dog fur rolling under the table, the floors in desperate need of washing and the dirty sink in the bathroom and declare this house CLEAN!! And uh, could someone please explain what "God's breeze" is...I'm hoping it's not what I'm thinking.......

So according to FlyLady you have to wear shoes to be clean? WHOO-HOO! I wear flip flops ALL the time, it must mean I'm clean . Flylady says you have to wear proper shoes with shoelaces, and tie the shoelaces properly. Sigh. That does not motivate me to clean. The only thing that motivates me to clean ... is ... starting. That is all. -

ok -- once again - roflmao? what is that?
next -- I can't believe I'm actually posting on a thread called "why i hate flylady".
that is , i can't believe I actually GET to post on a thread called...
when I ran a clutter group I discovered that clutterers will clutter anything. and flylady proved the rule. after I first signed up, and my system told me I had like 200 new emails the next day -- I thought it was a mistake. and the day after that and after that. I never got deep enough to even notice purple puddles, although the boogie word did make me itch. and the mass of discursive stuff.
It took a long time for me to get myself unsubscribed -- and an awful lot of my life trying to get all that ---- off my system. never did get it all. yoowff!!! it was absolute clutter. awful.
I ignored the shoe thing. please.
Awful, yes, awful.

ok -- once again - roflmao? what is that? Pssst ... Check out the "Community Section" at the top of the main layout of all the boards. Inside there, there is now a thread is called Acronyms and Ettiquette. So you can go there if you are ever wondering. ROFLMBO is Rolling On Floor Laughing My Butt Off. ROFLMAO is Rolling On Floor Laughing MY A** Off. If you go to the thread I mentioned, there's a link to many more creative variations. ----
