My Galveston neighbor Joe and I had the following conversation Wednesday,September 10th. "Well, what do you think,Joe? Are you staying or going?" I asked "Well," he said, "evacuation is such a hassle and I don't want to be late for work on Monday." "I don't want to be late for work on Monday either." I said. "So if you stay and I stay lets watch out for each other. Ok?" "Sounds like a plan to me." Joe said.We both left Thursday.
Wow how things change! My car is upside down next to his car in the parking lot of the apartment building. Our apartment kitchens are now one big messed up kitchen since the 12 foot wall of water hit his side of the building and burst through the wall on my side. Joe used his UTMB credentials to get back to the island. Everything he owned was in his apartment. When I talked to him today he said "We are both alive and if we had stayed neither one of us would be." Pretty sure Antonio is dead. I have very little clothing left and I don't even know what all is gone. Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers. There are 37,000 people homeless in Galveston. Think about that! Its as if an entire small town lost every house. When you are tempted to despair about cleaning you place ....remind yourself that no matter how dirty it is you still have it. Most of us would not rejoice over a cup of chili, a cookie and two bottles of water. Thats what was on the menu in Galveston today. That's ALL that was on the menu today. People are going through storm debris looking for cans. God help us all.

i am so sorry, but so thankful you evacuated and got out with your life.. i hope against hope that you find antonio in a tree glaring at you, like, you idiot, where is my salad. and wish you luck in finding him and getting some serious dirty lizard looks, even if it isn't likely.. i am so sorry there isn't more we can do for you here but you are in everyone's thoughts and prayers...

Oh Mama,
Sometimes being alive is all we have to hold onto. I can't even imagine how you feel after escaping squalor only to run into a hurricane. I'm am so very sorry. I've always thought you are solid and steadfast and I know you will overcome.
When times are really bad for me I remember what my mother always said," When you feel like you can't take one more minute, find someone who is worse off than you and help them however you can-even if the only thing you have to offer is a shoulder to cry on." I will always remember women in New Orleans who had nowhere but their arms to set their babies. They looked so hot, sticky and exhausted in every way. I remember thinking-I have so many chairs...
Know that we are with you. If we can mail you stuff (we hoarders could actually mail you a quite a bit;) please post it here.
May you grow stronger and happier each day.
My best to you sister, Lilith

*Re-stocking* iguanamamma (and anyone she knows that needs help) would be a great way to declutter with a special personal purpose.
Unfortunately, it would be too expensive for me to send things from Australia, which makes me feel disappointed... but if anyone lives closer, maybe they could help out??

I'm glad you left Iguanamamma! I'm sorry that you lost everything though. Especially sorry about your iguana. I had hoped that he survived.... Where are you staying now? Is FEMA going to help you?

Iguanamama-I am so sorry that things turned out so badly. I am glad that you are safe and healthy, though. I don't think the media is doing a very good job of keeping us up on what is truly happening down there. I hope things get better real fast.

I'm glad you are all right. I'm sorry about Antonio and your apartment. That's awful.
I can't imagine a 12 foot wall of water. It is so good that you weren't there when that happened.
My thought are with you and all the other who are struggling with this right now.

Iguanamama, I'm so glad that you and your neighbor changed your minds and decided to leave, instead of trying to stick it out. That you're alive and well is the most important thing--although I hope you find Antonio. I can't begin to imagine what you all are going through, but you're in my prayers.
When you--and your neighbors--know what you'll need to start over, please tell us! If there's one thing we all have, it's stuff! I'd be delighted to send anything that would be useful.
