Our bathtub has been running really slow for awhile. About a month ago DH tossed in a whole bottle of Liquid Plumber and it didn`t do a thing. Now the bathroom sink is running slow too, so I figure its probably got something in it where the drains meet coming down from the second floor. I went to the local neighborhood hardware store thinking to rent a pipe snake (never used one before) to take care of the whole problem. The only one they have for rent is too big to fit down the opening of the bathtub. They have some too buy, not really expensive either, but I didn`t know what size to get. The guy there said I should try more chemicals first and recommended something called The Enforcer and said they have something even more powerful if that doesn`t work. My dad did try plunging the tub a couple of weeks ago; it did help, but didn`t solve the problem. I can`t do it hard enough and when DH tried, it didn`t do anything, so he won`t try again.
So the Enforcer didn`t work, and when I went back, I read the warnings on the professional strength stuff and I really don`t want to deal with that. I bought a snake, just the smallest one, to give that a shot. I stuck it down the kitchen sink; one side of that is slow. Since the other side & the DW work fine, I figured it would be something right around the bend that would be simple enough for my first try.
The darn thing is stuck tight! I did read up on how to do it, but either my pipe has something weird in it or I messed up somehow. I`m glad I tried it there first, since the kitchen pipes are easy to get to. I`m waiting for my mom to bring me a pipe wrench so I can undo the drain pipes & figure out where it is stuck & hopefully learn how to use the snake properly so I can do the ones upstairs. I will be so screwed if it gets stuck up there and I can`t get to the pipes. I hate having to ask my dad to rescue me again, but unless I can figure out exactly what happened with the kitchen sink, I probably will.
I hate dealing with this. I wish we could afford to just call a plumber in to fix it.

well, kinda Most of us here spend a good chunk of time bashing ourselves, deserved or not for many things, so I thought it would be nice to share a triumph. I disassembling the kitchen drain to find that the snake had got caught up on a sort of blocker thing to keep water from backing up the other sink. Was able to twist it out easily once I knew that I could. The drain was clogged with horribly nasty, smelly, just gaggable goo. I took all the parts outside to hose off, since my other drains were having problems. While I ran to the hardware store to get some teflon tape, new gaskets, and advice, my mom managed to snake out the bathroom sink , but she couldn`t get the snake down the tub drain. It took awhile, because it kept wanting to go up the overflow pipe, but I had patience & tried just twisting, instead of pushing. I didn`t think it worked because it didn`t bring up all that much, but there was a wad of hair very tightly twisted at the tip of the snake. It is going now, so I guess that`s all it was. The kitchen sink drain is now reassembled, and so far no leaks. If I had any energy I would do happy dances & make margaritas, but about all I`m up for now is bragging to you all. I`m available, only $20 per hour, plus travel expenses,
