Apologies if this has been covered before, but I'd like to know what you folks think about it. Was just sitting here in my bedroom, finishing up my delicious store brand toaster pastries. Realized that I have a paper towel and a wrapper here that I need to *go* throw away. And it is a case of *going* to throw it away, I do not have a garbage can in my bedroom, so I'll have to get up and take it into the bathroom. (Sorry about the terrible pun...) I got rid of the garbage can in my room earlier this month. My reasoning there was that I'm trying to get in better shape/lose weight/get 10,000 steps a day. If the garbage can is in the bathroom, I will get more steps! Yeeeahhh.... well, no. Unfortunately, not having the convenience of a nearby garbage can means the wrapper is still sitting over there on the floor, and the paper towel is still sitting here on the desk. And they're gonna stay that way until I have the initiative to go throw the crap away. I'm starting to think that the convenience of a nearby trash can in every room will equal less crap sitting around, and the assurance that the trash actually will get thrown away at a reasonable rate. If there's a full trash barrel in the house, by golly, it will get emptied on Monday. Whereas if I should happen to see some wrapper on the floor, I will most likely forget about it or ignore it for weeks! ...Okay, I actually am going to throw the garbage away now. But seriously. Garbage cans in every room: yay or nay?

Well, I have trash cans in every room. Two in the study--one by my desk and one by the TV-watching chair.
If I didn't have them everywhere, trash would pile up on my desk, the floor around my bed, by the TV . . . . The house looks a lot neater with many trash cans.
So my vote is yes, get them and use them. Maybe revisit the idea of only having one in a few years, when things are more under control for you in general.

Yes! I've found that if there is a nearby place for the trash to go as soon as it becomes trash (like the ice cream bar wrapper I just tossed in the trash can beside my computer desk), I can get it there. If I have to get up and go to the kitchen, I'm much more likely to leave it sitting around all day, because I put it aside and forget about it.

... Okay, I actually am going to throw the garbage away now. But seriously. Garbage cans in every room: yay or nay? The ONLY rooms in our house that do NOT have garbage cans are "formal living and dining room". Some rooms also have recycle bins. ONE ROOM has TWO recycle bins in different places craft room]. I think the general consensus for ANYONE who is not a neatnik extreme is TRASH CANS everywhere. And/or recycle bins. You can get your 10,000 steps in other ways. Do NOT make it easy to sink back into squalor.

Almost every room here has a rubbish basket. Not a big garbage can, but a basket lined with a plastic bag from the shops (cos it's easier to just pull the bag out when we're leaving the house, rather than having to make a special bin emptying trip). Though, if a garbage can is what your situation requires - go for it! Something I have learnt here is that I need to make it easier to be clean that to be messy. As well as the rubbish baskets, I also have those disposable wet cleaning wipes placed all over the house now. I know that if I have to go out of my way to find cleaning products and cloths and such, it doesn't get done. If I can just pull a couple of wipes out that are within arm's reach, I'll do it - then drop them in the convenient rubbish basket! I guess that's a big 'yes' from me

I have one in all bathrooms, each kid's bedroom and the kitchen. The bathrooms and bedrooms have those small plastic ones that I line with plastic grocery store bags. The kitchen has a tall one.
I really need one for my bedroom and the den as well. In the laundry room I have a plastic grocery store bag hanging from one of the shelves that I put dryer lint, etc in.
If you don't want to buy garbage cans for the rooms, you can get some plastic grocery store bags and hang the handle over a drawer knob or something and use that, then throw it away once a day or once it's full. It works great for rooms where you are in a lot but don't have garbage cans and also rooms that you don't want' to put a garbage can in.

I have garbage cans in every room and two in larger rooms. Also disposable wipes in every room. I could not keep my home trash free without them. I simply run through the house every trash pick-up day and empty them all. My family will use a trash can if it's there but won't if they have to walk to another room,

At the risk of sounding a bit weird (well, heck, I am ) I have found over several years that I need to have the open top waste paper basket style of rubbish bins, not the ones with the swinging lids. I have no idea why, but using the ones with lids feels like a big deal, whereas using the open top ones is easy.

Thanks so much, everyone! Just wanted to say once again that this forum is great. I think I may have had a bit of illogical thinking in addition to the "getting my steps" thing. I may have been thinking, subconsciously, something about how "if there's no garbage can in the room, I won't produce garbage in the room". Which... no. I produce garbage everywhere! I'm realizing now that it is also my family that won't walk to another room to throw stuff away, haha. So yep. Definitely need to have some kind of waste receptacle everywhere! I like the bag idea, too!

This doesn't sound weird at all to me, it's part of the problem I have with the garbage can under the sink. I have to open the cabinet up, pull out the can, and you know, wow. That does actually seem like a very big deal some days!

About the swing top garbage cans; the top gets dirty! No matter what, it's going to get something on it and it's not part of my routine to clean it, so I start wondering when I'm supposed to, then I start wondering what else I'm'not doing, then it's just too much. Of course it's simple to just wipe it off when you get something on it, but that just doesn't "seem" right. I like the open top ones too, but I would like one of the step on kind where the lid comes up. That would be cool, but I haven't seen any lately that aren't expensive.

I have trash bags or cans in every room, and three in the kitchen. Anywhere that trash is likely to generate. IMHO, it's the first thing I recommend to anyone who wants to get out of squalor --- have plenty of handy trash receptacles - in the kitchen, sometimes, I hang a little plastic sack from the grocery store over the corner of a cabinet door near where I'm working, for an "instant" space-saving trash can.
