Yesterday I drove by a commercial property that just sold. It is a house that can be used for a business also. There was the smell of Pine Sol in the air. The yard had been trimmed an cleaned, some old furniture had been set on the curb and there were buckets of paint ready to be taken into the house. A lady came out of the house put her hands on her hips a looked around with a satisfied smile on her face. I wanted to feel what she was feeling. A new place, a new start..... I have been half heartedly cleaning out a very historically nasty closet in the laundry room. I took the body of a long dead rat out to the trash yesterday. I also pulled up the stained sheet vinyl and tossed it too. I was sitting in the closet and decided to paint the closet inside. I could just hear my husband objecting -in my head. I snuck out to Walmart and bought paint anyway. I picked out a soft yellow paint and some brushes. I didn't let him know I had bought paint for the closet. When he went to work this morning I began painting the closet. I am almost done. While I was painting I heard something squeak in the street. Suddenly, I was back. The faint smell of freshly painted yellow walls and the squeak had to be the trolley turning to head up the street to the other end of the Strand and then to the Seawall. I also realized why I chose that particular shade of yellow. It was the same shade as the walls in Galveston. I also realized that I really, really want to buy a house on the Texas coast. Pretty dumb idea right now. But... in addition to the commercial house that just sold a crew of guys began working on two vacant lots across the street. I know these lots belong to a real estate developer and anything built there has to be general retail. My property value just went up. I told a friend who has just had a break up with his girlfriend. He has a big bruise on his forehead from falling off of the couch when he was trying to drown his sorrows. His conclusion was that painting was better than drinking and crying. He said it was at least a productive use of liquid.

I don't think it's stupid at all, and your friend is right.. better to brighten up your day than drown your sorrows.
I did something similar today. I bought curtains for the kitchen. I felt so good about having maintained a litter-free floor for two weeks, that I decided to hang curtains. Never mind that every drawer front is missing, and the ceiling tiles are stained and askew from the last tub overflow.... I think the kitchen looks beautiful with the new curtains, and it made me smile.

why should there be anything stupid about wanting a fresh start, a beautiful yellow closet, or moving to the coast. i don't know what you should or shouldn't do with residence/housing/starting over.. but none of those things sound dumb to me. they sound like loosely connected experiences, memories and desires coming together to give you some idea of where you want to go in life from here. nothing dumb in any of that. and congrats on your closet.

i don't think there is anything stupid about any of it, and your post made it come alive for me, too.
ignore your husband and make yourself happy, and do it with confidence and conviction, and i bet he'll go along with you.
let us know how it turns out. go go go!!!

I agree with everyone else, not stupid! I actually would consider the Texas coast although I hate hot weather, that is one of the reasons I stay in Minnesota. I also love your friends comment about the productive use of liquid. Anyways, My BIG to you and all you are going through. You are in my prayers.

My husband loved the color. It is called chantrell. He said that since we both liked the color we could paint the rooms and closets in our NEW house that color. We are going back to Galveston (and this is just a figure of speech) come Hell or high water!
