It's been about a year since I could go to chat (I'm on a chromebook, which won't run Java), and I really miss it.
I know there are free chat options, like mibbit. Chromebooks and a few other computers will not run Java (SOS chat) any time soon, I don't think.
Can we have an alternative chat option for people like me who are locked out of chat?
I'll organize it myself if you prefer? I'm not wanting to be all like "Hey, you, take on this new responsibility." But I don't want to just start a new chat without forum leadership blessing. I'd rather you guys do it, but I'll do it myself if you say you don't want to and say it's ok.

This has been a concern of mine for some time, wind. Greg tells us that AddonChat is developing a non-Java chat platform that is supposed to come out within the next year. I don't know how far along they are at this point. Hopefully he can give us a hint. Meanwhile, if you want to find a place to serve as a temporary chat room for those who can't or don't want to run Java, go right ahead. You may need to be the moderator for it, however.

Thanks for the update, Greg. I'm sure you'll let us know when that situation changes.

Celeste, I'm a little surprised that the mobile login doesn't come up with a Chromebook. I might private message you later with an idea for this user.

Greg, thank you for working on this. I know it's a real chore but it will mean a lot to many of us. I know there are some who don't come to chat because it's just not worth the hassle anymore. I'm often ready to give up, too, which would be a shame. Keep trying. I just know you can figure it out.

Thank you guys! If it's just not possible, it's just not possible. Just thought I'd ask.

I've been a member of this forum for almost a year, I love this forum but I'm sad that I've never been able to use the chat-room since I don't have Java on my laptop. (And I can't instal Java as that would mean I must keep on installing/uninstalling Java many times daily because I use a computer program on my laptop for my job which will crash if Java is installed). If everyone who would be interested in using a Java-free chat-room could write their nick in this thread - perhaps we could be enough people to keep a Java-free "shoutbox" or alternative chat-link somewhat lively? SO FAR WE ARE: 5windsparkleeuropegirlnewmewombleAnd maybe ctrlz also, are you also interested? Anyone else?

I might also be interested. Not sure I'd use it constantly, but my hubby doesn't want java installed on the computers either.

Well I spent all day trying to get into Chat. Kept telling me it was a plug-in failure. In the past when I have gotten this message I would just reload the page and all would be fine. Now ...I link to chat and there is a brief flash of the Authentication Box that allows (usually) the plug-in (*where I would normally agree) And then it is gone... Sux :-( /me starts to cry But I challenged away on my own... ((sigh)) WHY did it JUST stop working? (for those of us who it was working for?) I miss the feature!!!

clearance, java updated last week. you would want to go to java.com to get the latest version. In the past few months, many browsers developed a policy that they won't let java work if you're using an older version of java.
