Hi, We (AddonChat) do hope to have a non-java dependent chat developed sometime in the future. I'm not on the development team and can't really tell you how long or when it will be available. Java has had a slew of recent updates due to security issues, and they've also added new security requirements for developers to adhere to. While the AddonChat software itself has had no related security issues during this time, we've been forced to release minor updates to accommodate changes being made by Java and various web browses. Because of this, it's imperative that users update to the latest version of Java from www.java.com/getjava - It's also strongly advised that upon doing so that they clear their Java cache from the Java Control Panel ( www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml ) before restarting their browser and reloading the chat room. This will ensure they're using both the very latest edition of Java and AddonChat. Lastly, make sure that your computer does not have any older versions of java. If so remove them.

Hi folks: I'm also having trouble with chat. I'm on an iMac, and I updated Java, but no luck getting in to chat at all. I have both Safari and Firefox browsers. It worked a few months ago, now it won't?

Apparently Java is not supported on Chrome. java.com/en/download/faq/chrome.xmlI don't know if there's a place to enable or disable java in Safari. That's what I use and have no problem getting into chat. Maybe go to Java Preferences.

Apparently Java is not supported on Chrome. Java works fine with the Chrome BROWSER. I can get into chat with that -- from a computer with a normal operating system. The original poster wind (from the first post on page one of this thread) was asking about the Chrome OPERATING SYSTEM. She has a "chromebook" -a laptop that doesn't run on Mac or PC or Linux. It runs off the web-Chrome OS (operating system) that exists in a CLOUD and is what operates her laptop. That is an entirely different matter. It does have the Chrome Browser as default synced with its Chrome OS, although you can add and use other browsers such as firefox or safari. (just like InternetExplorer comes default synced with Windows, although you can add and use a variety of other browsers.). But because the operating system on a Chromebook is on the net and not on a harddrive, it's like a simulated computer, so you cannot install things like Java into it. Even if you try other browser interfaces (such as firefox or safari) with it, it's not really THERE so you cannot really interact with Java.

Thanks Lioness, your explanation made it clear as to why I haven't been able to enter chat using my chromebook. Please add my name to the list of people who would appreciate a non-Java chat. I came here today specifically to use chat and sadly it is not available to me. Has any progress on providing chat to non Java been made?

It's very early and it's in the alpha testing stage with our AddonChat staff only. It requires absolutely no addons such as java or flash to work.

Wind, I'm not as consistent a chatter as I used to be, but I would like to get back into the habit.
I can use the chat feature here fine, but I would be glad chat in an alternate room with you. I don't know if you are thinking about opening a regular room that's always there that I could just drop in on, or are thinking about opening a temporary chat room on an as-needed basis. But either way, if you need chat company one day, if you post about it and provide a link, I'll try it to see if you are still there.
Of course, like I said, I'm not as regular as I'd like right now, so I might not see a post on time. Life has changed a bit (as it is wont to do) and I'm in transition, struggling to change with it, trying to establish routines. But, if the stars align, our needs line up, and you post a link on a day I check in, I'd sure come visit you.
EDIT: Well, now I feel silly. I didn't realize this was a very old post. I'm sure Wind has made arrangements by now, but the offer stands for anyone who needs someone to challenge with. If I see a post with a link to an alternate chatroom, I'll come visit.
