What could be causing this horrible smell in my bathroom? It smells like something died in there. The bathroom is CLEAN (level 0 ... spotless and decluttered... it's a brand new house, so unseen mold, etc. could not be the problem). If something died in the wall, wouldn't the smell be in the room on the other side of the wall too? (another bathroom on one side, & the laundry room on the other) I am seriously at a loss. I've bleached the toilet (which was clean to begin with), mopped the floors, bought a new trashcan for that room, etc... but the smell is not going away. You can smell it over the bleach. The floor is tile and we don't have any rugs that could be holding in smells. The shower curtain is clean too (no mold or mildew). I'm going nuts here trying to figure out what it is

Are there any drains in the room that don't get used regularly? (sink, shower, bath, floor drain) If the trap dries out you can get sewer gas smells from the drain. Dump a quart or so of water in all the drains and see if that helps?

You can dump vinegar in the drains. I would also give any vents a check "just in case". Good luck, and congrats. It sounds like this is the only thing in your bathroom that needs to be fixed. That's great.

I wonder if there might be a leak in your outgoing plumbing. If you don't think it is something dead decomposing in the walls, vents, or under the house, then I would have a plumber come in and check it out. It may not cost too much just to have them look.

Often enough bad smells in my places have come from the drains. Pouring vinegar, or better, javel water in them fixes the problem for me. Otherwise, you may have something in your walls or a backed-up sewage line problem. Calling in a plumber for a consult might be a good idea if you can afford it. ~Mouse

The toilet has a wax ring seal at the base. If that leaks, it could be a cause for an awful odor. i know from experience. This is not a DIY job-you must call a plumber. It is not at all a reflkection of your housekeeping or bad contracting in building your house. S++T happens!

Thanks for all of the great advice. The smell is gone now. This is strange... when I went to the store today, I noticed our whole town smelled like my bathroom did (not as strong as in the bathroom, but the same smell). My sewage is in with the cities... so I'm wondering if there was a large gas buildup or something.
I'm just glad it's gone!

Ugh I hate that! I looked for a smell for a couple days. Glad it is gone.
