I've never paid much attention to any of the tech features of message boards but as I use this one more, I realize I often wish I could "Thumbs up" a message or thread. Is there a technical feature like that which has eluded me? If not, does the Admin staff here feel like asking for such a feature?

I just clicked the thumbs up in the top corner of your post. Is that what you mean? And is that new? If so, that was a quick response!  Edit: Top right corner next to the word "Quote" for me, perhaps next to the word "Edit" for you. |

I often use the "like" button but have been afraid that all I'm doing is bugging the posters who get a million notifications that that cake chick likes them. Again. I don't know about others, but the "like" button motivates me. It lets me know that I have typed something that touched someone... maybe to uplift them, maybe to encourage them, or maybe I have had a bit of an epiphany that enlightened them a bit as well. I am a huge fan of the new "like" button and I use it to encourage posters to keep on keeping on.... Taking out that sack of trash is a victory, posting that the bathroom is clean is a victory... just encouraging someone else is wonderful. I just click to let people know that I enjoyed what they wrote even if I don't have time to respond to it specifically. Thanks to Celeste and the other mods for giving us this easy to use tool of encouragement.

I like the like button too. BTW splendidcakes, your little winky woman is winking at me just fine! I've never seen a forum where you have the option to 'like' an entire thread. As I recall too, the like button for individual posts was a feature of the new software. I'm suspecting that the admins have availed us of the features available within the software. IOW, if we don't have it, it doesn't exist. Man how spoiled are we?? |

The 'Like' (aka 'Thumbs Up')  button is the equivalent, 60isolderthanithot. Look to the upper right of the post and you will see it between the 'edit' button and the 'gear' button

It's only as new as the ProBoards v5 software, lifer, which means it's been here since we rolled out v5 almost a year ago.
Sometimes we are fast to respond, but we didn't do this. ProBoards did.

As Eagle said ... the "like button" is a feature of Proboards Version 5 upgrade
an updgrate which happened here at SOS on March 11, 2013.
At first I didn't quite understand it,
because I don't use facebook.
So, instead, I've *never* used it,
but I have OBSERVED how others use it here.
I've become confused by the "like" button,
because different people use it in different ways.
In the past 8 months, I've observed some trends:
Sometimes, I'll notice that someone has "liked" every post within a specific thread.
That really confused me, but then I began to observe more closely:
I've seen some members whose time is very limited, and
(rightfully so) --
need amnesty from replying to posts.
They just don't have the wherewithal to post replies that day.
But they want to acknowledge that they *read* the posts,
so then they click the "like button" on every post in the thread.
It's not really an "approval". It's just an "acknowledgement of reading".
At other times, someone clicks "like" on all the posts within a thread,
because they TRULY appreciate all the posts on that thread.
This would be especially true in threads like
"working in threes" or a "gratitude list" thread --
-- where all the posts are sincere efforts and therefore truly likeable.
Another possibility that I've theorized about:
Sometimes I wonder if a reader APPROVES OF and APPLAUDS
several (but not all) posts within a thread and hits "like-button" on those.
But then proofreads, and perhaps wonders if the omitted ones might *seem* "unliked",
and therefore goes back and Like-buttons all the rest of the posts within that thread,'
so that everyone feels better?
Maybe this DOESN'T OCCUR but my hoarder brain thought of this because ...
well ... if we feel that an OBJECT's feelings will be "hurt" if we throw it out,
I'm guessing that some members feel uncomfortable about clicking
the like-button on only some but not all posts within a thread,
wondering if they'd be offending anyone by skipping a post.
I've observed so many patterns,
that now i really don't know what is meant when people click the "like-button" on a post.
I have come to the conclusion that
sometimes it's heartfelt applause and endorsement,
sometimes it's encouragement,
sometimes it's just acknowledgement,
and sometimes people accidentally click "like" on the post above or below the one they intended to click on!
Another thing I've noticed is that ...
several members who post via mobile phone have said
they cannot see any "likes" that have been already added to posts.
I'm not sure if it's invisible to them,
or if they cannot see it due to have a small screen on their phone,
or perhaps they just don't know where to look.
At any rate, I've seen several mobile-phone posters who said they cannot see likes.
Sorry for all the rambling ...
All i know is that I don't know what it means when I see that a post has been "liked".
Again, as I said, I don't have a facebook account, and I don't read others' facebook accounts.
So SOS is the only place I've ever seen the "like button" used.
Thus my ignorance.
but if there was a "Recommend" button, that would be VERY clear.

Several times, I've thought a post in one thread should be posted to others as well. One way of accomplishing this is to hit the Quote, edit it as you want, then Save it to your clipboard and Paste it into an entry in another thread. This means you generate several entries, actually, since you ask the person if it's okay, they answer, then if the answer is yes, you post the quote to Thread 2. If there are questions, that means more entries talking about it.

Everyone can see who liked a post. When there are several 'likers' anyone can hover over the link to see all the names listed you 'liked' a post.

It is 'editable' in that you can remove your 'like' later.

There is an option when using a phone to view as desktop. When that is chosen the user can see the like button. Choosing to view the site on a phone the same as it looks on a desktop does work, as I have selected it on my phone.
Another thing you cannot see is 'notifications' and I found that annoying, which is why I switched to Desktop view.
Here is how it is done for those who have phones and want to try it: (My phone is an Android, so I can only confirm that it works for an Android phone, but I am guessing it works for all phones because it is on the ProBoards menu when I open SOS.)
Open SOS on your mobile phone.
Scroll to the bottom of the homepage.
Select 'desktop' in the bottom right. This changes the view to look like on a desktop computer. Generally this makes it much smaller, but you can increase the size fairly easily with a touch screen and you will be able to see more options than in the mobile view.
To change back to mobile view:
Scroll to the bottom of the homepage.
Select mobile. This changes SOS back to mobile view.

So the people reading that thread can see the Like and that's all?
People reading the post can see who liked the post. There wouldn't really be anything else to see besides the fact that it was liked and who liked it.
BUT if someone removes their 'like' no-one would know someone had done so, not even the liker who changed their mind, because there is no record of unliking. Once un-like it chosen the person's name as a liker is gone, too.
