Well, after several weeks of procrastination, then finally arranging for the estimate on the furnace repair, waiting for them to get back to me, then arranging the actual work, he is due to come tomorrow afternoon. Yay, we'll have heat--which will be appreciated as it is starting to get pretty cold!
The basement is pretty good from the original cleaning when he came for the estimate. I only need to clean the cat boxes and maybe do a quick sweeping.
But I would really like to get the upstairs presentable enough to have him deal with the bathroom sink. It would be a miraculously wonderful thing to have that sink working again after several years without it!
However, this means a TON of work between now and tomorrow afternoon. I am keeping in mind that he really only needs it to be open and neat enough to walk to the bathroom and do the work there. But still, that means shifting mountains of laundry and boxes and baskets of papers and other cr*p that are currently blocking the way. Also, I wouldn't want the kitchen to be gross. It would just be too creepy for me if someone were to see the kitchen with a lot of dirty dishes, scraps on the floor, etc.
SO...I'm going to try to do what I can, in between carpool, and other work which must be done today and tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted, and would appreciate any encouragement you could give.
Thanks!

I will send cleaning vibes too. . Here they come! You can do this. Just remember a little bit at a time. Don't look at the big picture too much, it gets overwhelming. Just keep going. Before long it will be all done! We are with you in spirit.

You guys are SO sweet and nice and encouraging. Yet I just don't think I'm going to make it. I haven't done ANY of what would be necessary, and I have an appointment later tonight. I'd have to get it all done tomorrow, before 2pm when he is scheduled to get here.
I might try, depending on how I feel in the morning. Obviously, it would just be a "stash and dash", shoving the baskets and so forth into the bedrooms, and bagging up the laundry and hauling to the basement laundry room. So it's POSSIBLE.
I have to get over my concern about what the plumber will think of the state of our house. I have to get over my concern about what the plumber will THINK about the state of our house. I HAVE to get over my concern about what the plumber will think about the state of our house.
I'll try to keep telling myself that...

Update--I think I will try hard to get it all ready by the time he gets here tomorrow. I have asked my 13-year-old son to help, and he really likes the idea of being able to use that sink again. I can easily shove a bunch of stuff into my daughter's room, as she won't even be home at the time, and then bag up the rest. I'll have to wipe down the bathroom, itself, and neaten the downstairs enough that I won't melt in humiliation if he looks at it (the kitchen and living room can't be disgusting, in other words). I think I MAY be able to pull it off, hopefully.

Waiting for the good news. Just heat is good news, of course.
Even though I know it is hard to get so much done in so little time, adreneline can really fire us up. Here's hoping you're already clearing those paths and giving the plumber room to work.
BTW, it doesn't matter what he thinks. All that matters is his skill level at repairing stuff.
If your plumbing company is anything like ours, the guys who work on the furnace do not work on the water plumbing. They send someone else to do that work. So you might have to wait. Or in your area, they may do it all. Anyway, I have faith in you that you can get the areas cleared enough to give him access.

Thanks again for the encouragement.
Actually, since we have a forced-hot-water boiler, it is the same guy. In fact, when he was here doing the estimate, he was all ready to rush upstairs and look at the clog right then! I told him, "I don't want to do it right now." But he said that when he comes to do the furnace he can take care of the clog at the same time (which could also save money, in not having him make the second trip).
My 13-year-old is going to start bagging up laundry in a few minutes. I told him he had to get that done before going to the library. (He wanted to go first and help later.)
Even my littlest guy is going to help. I figure I could allocate a couple of hours for the upstairs and an hour to do basic clearing and neatening downstairs (the "path" to the stairs). We'll see!

Heh--to save time and work, the kids came up with the idea of putting the bagged up laundry into the bedroom, as well as the baskets of junk that I was temporarily storing there. Although that is not ideal, I can easily take them out later (tonight) and in the meantime it quickly gets them out of the way so we can focus on clearing the rest of the stuff.

Sounds like a plan. First heat. Then back to cleaning. Easier to clean when you are warm.

Update--most of the hallway is cleared, laundry bagged and stowed. Now to wipe down the bathroom and make the sink accessible. Then cleaning downstairs.
Further Update--Ugh. There still seems so much to do! Especially because I'm feeling especially tired. To help me focus, here's my list:
Change cat box Neaten side yard, leading to basement door
Clean bathroom floor
Clean bathroom sink
Clean toilet
Neaten bathroom Cover rusty radiator with plastic
Clear hallway Sweep hallway
Sweep stairs
Clear and clean dining room table
Sweep dining room floor Sweep living room floor
Sweep kitchen floor Wipe up kitchen floor
Clear and clean kitchen tables Clear dishes out of kitchen sink
I'll be back to mark off items as I progress. (The is is "live" post, I guess you could say.)
Update--Two of my kids have volunteered to clean the bathroom. I may have to make finishing touches, but it should still save me significant time.
UPDATE--I didn't finish everything on my list, above, but he is here now, doing the basement work. He says he will have time to do the bathroom sink, too. So, he and I will just have to live with the fact that the upstairs is not perfect. At least I got the important parts done (bathroom, hallway, etc.). I'll check back in after he leaves.
