UPDATE -- The plumber just left. We now have heat--yay!
However, as we feared, he could not get the drain cleared for the bathroom sink, in spite of valiant efforts. He suggests that we re-run the drain line into a pipe that works. That would be several hundred dollars, unless my husband does it (in which case it would be a lot of work and mess). So we still don't have water in the sink.
Anyway, it was WONDERFUL to be able to have him walk through the house (he must have gone into every room, except 3 of the bedrooms!) and not be too upset about the condition. I mean, everything is still a mess, but at least I wasn't worried about *dirtiness*, because I had swept all the floors (and had even wiped down some walls and floors). He sat in the living room and wrote up his bill while I attended to the huge pile of laundry that was flowing all over the floor. Didn't seem to faze him.
Thanks again, everyone, for the encouragement.

Great news! It's a shame about the sink, I hope you can get it fixed soon. Take care.

That's okay! It doesn't need to be perfect (something I need to tell myself more often). Just keep telling yourself, "He's seen worse...he's seen worse...he's seen worse..."
Kudos to you and the kids for working together to get ready. Nice teamwork!
ETA: Oops--didn't see that this had spilled over to a second page.
Anyway, it's a shame he couldn't fix the sink, but at least you now know what it will take to get it fixed.
