I inadvertently put it in my cedar chest over the winter, and now (guess what?) it smells like cedar. Can it go in the washing machine or what? I wear this hat a lot in the summer and want to keep it in good shape. Thanks!

What is it made from? Fabric: hand washing and then shaping over a bowl with the brim flat to dry. Synthetic woven straw: I would shape it first on an outdoor table. Spray with water to just rinse it good and allow to dry in sunshine. Straw can't handle moisture, perhaps sprinkle it with soda and air out outside.

Thanks, Di. I think when we get a sunny day, I will put it outside, maybe with soda, and see if that works.

If it's a cloth hat like a baseball hat, you can set it in the top-shelf-rack of your dishwasher. Notice that the rack has upright pieces as part of the rack's structure, designed to hold dishes/glasses. You can carefully set your hat over them so that the hat is mostly held in its correct shape. This works. I've done it.
NOTE: Don't do this if the hat contains cardboard inside it.
Don't wash it with greasy dishes.
Turn off the drying cycle of the dishwasher.
Caution, don't use regular dishwasher detergent -- if it contains bleach. Use a SMALL amount of something else.
To dry the hat, take it out of the dishwasher and set it atop a jar, and shape it with your hands, and then leave it to air dry.

Thank you, lioness. This one is a straw hat, but I also have a cloth one that has never been washed. The step-by-step instructions will help me, since I should probably wash it, too.
