I usually typed the emoticon, then put in a space, then the punctuation. Once I've seen on the preview that it has parsed into an image I get rid of the space.

It did work for me in the past. I've seen some smileys "disappear" since then.

You couldn't really do that in the past because then you got " ling" (without the space!) Maybe there have been changes to avoid that?
