I'm scared about when the Garbagemen come this morning. I usually put out one or two very neatly packed cans of garbage, most often just one. But my daughter, fiance and their infant daughter (my grand-daughter) moved into my home next week. In "consolidating" households, a lot of my stuff was put outside for trash. A large sofa-bed, broken chairs, a broken table, plus about eight black plastic bags of garbage. One bag is really gross-it contains food discarded from my fridge and freezer. It smells and it's leaking. The garbagemen basicalty pick up whatever they want, what fits in the truck. I called the Town Highway dept and they say it is up to each hauler's discretion. If they don't like the looks of something it is left behind. In the past, I would break down anything they wouldn't take into smaller amounts, stuff them in black bags and put them back out slowly over weeks of pickups. But my daughter and the fiance say "It's their job to take garbage" " and encouraged (forced) me to leave everything outside for pick-up. If they won't take it, I could call a private carter, but of course that costs money. So say a prayer, cross your fingers, hope the guys are in a good mood and will take everything. I'll report back later. It's like 9 am, they usually come before noon. This is really bothering me. One time I put out a lot of heavy canned goods, and I heard them cursing. But at least they would never come to my door and yell at me face to face.

I hope they take all the bags of garbage at the very least.

You could just go out and say thank you to them. Most people don't say thank you to them. They forget that they're people who work a job that most people look down upon. So, just being friendly to them might go far. My garbage man comes at a time when I can smile and wave and say thanks, and unless it's really something like a couch or something that takes a special call they'll take everything I put out.
I usually have light bags, because I cannot lift heavy things and everything is taped shut. They don't take yard waste from here no matter how I package it. So now I hide it in with regular trash and tape the bag shut. But, now with the Hugelkultur pile I don't have to do that anymore.
If they did take it, then next week make a point to express your gratitude. And pretend that they have always taken everything out.

My dear hubby and I have been bribing garbage people for 39+ years. To take away rubbish from various Reno projects above and beyond the norm. At three houses.
$$ at holidays. Chocs. Cookies. Cold water. Whatever.
Not every week but often enuff. We also wave at them every week and yell out thank you.

Just double-bag the leaky one and you should be fine.

If they really can choose not to take it, then standing outside with a twenty dollar bill, a smile, and a "please take this?" will do wonders. Bribery works.

Well - did they take it all? I hope so - if not - you got plenty of suggestions here. I find the subtle bribery is most effective....

They came and took everything EXCEPT the old sofa-bed. So I called a private trucker, he came the next day and it's gone. It cost a little, but at least the trash is gone. Yes that's right, everyone who suggested a "bribe" or "tip" , plus to think about the poor guys working in the extreme heat and cold to haul away people's trash. Yes, they are human beings doing a necessary tho unpleasant job.

The best part is- today I put out my usual one can of trash, and everything is neatly bagged. I feel like I'm starting with a clean slate.

Jannie, I hope that "clean slate" feeling lasts for quite a while! You did the hard work to get to this point and deserve all the good feelings that go along with it!
