Updated below to make more sense! Hey everybody. We're working on a new board policy that makes sense for the new forum to be separate from Squalor Survivors - being on a different server makes copy and pasting information a little different than the old site, especially since the forum there will be shut down soon. Please copy and save any posts from that site that you want to keep on your personal computer. Please do not copy and paste full threads to the new forums as the posts are owned by individual posters, and we may or may not be able to get permission from everyone. It stinks to know we'll lose some resources, but it gives us an opportunity to start those conversations over here. It is unclear whether or not the old forums will be archived at SqualorSurvivors.com. And, as always, you own the copyright to your own posts on either forum and are free to post them here, or anywhere else. Thanks to everyone who is being so patient while we work these things out!

Sorry if I confused anyone, and Thank You to the people who wrote me with questions. You are more than welcome to post in any folder here. The only thing we're asking people not to do is copy whole threads from the old board and paste them here. You're free to repost anything you wrote yourself. Hopefully that cleared things up, and if it didn't, Please let me know. Thanks!

Just for clarification...
If I want to copy my own words or photos from SS to here, no problem, since the SS policy and this board's policy say I have the copyright for what I post.
But if I wanted to copy and paste someone else's words/posts/photos from SS and put them here, I can't do that because only that other person has the copyright to their own words....right?

- I have several threads over there that are seven pages long. What I would be permitted to do would be to paste the entire thread over here but delete all the other members' comments from within the thread. So if I copied over a thread it would go like this: (this isn't my exact thread, but it approximates the style of it). - Copy of first post in thread: Hello my name is Lion and I have a problem with my smelly house and I am afraid of my neighbor complaining.
- Here followed several welcoming, encouraging posts, with some good suggestions. I won't quote them here do to copyright issues. Nor will I tell you who replied to my thread. I am not even going to mention anyone else's name here.
However, I will give you a brief list of the types of specific advice I was given:
1) It was suggested that I try sleeping on sheets instead of in a sleeping bag. 2) It was suggested that I add some vinegar to my rinse rinse water when washing my clothes. This would help neutralize odors. 3) It was suggested that I not despair, but instead pick up one piece of trash.
- Copy of second post in thread: Thank you everyone for your replies. I am still scared but thank you for being here.
** at this point in ORIGINAL thread I quoted Ms.NicePerson and then replied to her quote. Or I directly addressed Ms.NicePerson and thanked her or asked her for clarification. I would not be able to copy that HERE.
All I could say would be this: Here in original thread I thanked some people and I asked "Wouldn't my clothes smell like vinegar?"
- Comments received: [Again not quoting anyone, or using anyone else's name, or using anyone's exact wording.]
Here someone replied that when adding vinegar to rinse water, the clothes might smell a bit vinegary when wet, but the vinegar smell vanishes after the clothes are fully dried in the dryer.
Her is a list of a few more suggestions I received: 1) why not do _____ . 2) call someone about that ! 3) can a friend help? 4) drink water.
- Copy of next post in thread: At this point in thread, I had a long meandering emotional update on my progress -- or lack of progress.
I am quoting the entire thing word-for-word, because it is my writing. I delete one sentence that refers specifically to one person who has been posting on my thread, but I keep about 95% of what I've written here.
- a list of new suggestions from responders (without quoting their exact wording or mentioning their names)
- Another long-winded update from me, quoted in its entirety.
- This pattern could continue for the entire 7-page thread, when copying it over here.
Summary: If you want to copy your entire thread over (if it's all about your own struggle) ... - Copy all your own thought processes over from your own posts on your thread.
- Delete the comments from people who replied within your thread.
- You can list a summary of helpful suggestions you received -- without quoting anyone or mentioning anyone's name.
- You can insert an explanation of what topic you are replying to, but delete any sections where you had orginally quoted anyone.
- Basically just copy your OWN stuff over. You can insert a notation in between your own messages that explains what you were replying to, but delete all comments, replies, and other usernames from your thread.
==== NOTE: My above idea applies to threads that are totally about one person ... you yourself, and your own personal struggles If you started a thread on Squalor Survivors that asked for opinions on a general topic: Such as: "How did your mother influence your squalorous life?" -- Well ... that thread would be full of people's personal responses and you couldn't copy it over here. Even if you STARTED the thread, it wasn't really your own thread, because it became a "group thread." With something like that, all you could do would be to start a new thread here, starting with a blank slate, asking the question again. ===

It all makes sense to me...-copyright wise- but am still wondering...which of the threads are essential to save, which can be used as guides to newcomers? how do we decide? SO MUCH good advice on the soon to be defunct forums. And when they get erased, that knowledge is gone too. i wish i had the time to go over and peruse the whole thing! But then, if i do manage and find something useful i can copy it to my computer files but never cite it here?

ramatama, if you can get permission from the poster, you can repost it here. If you don't have permission, you can't.

It kinda sucks, and I am learning as we go. This is not a proboard made up rule or something the mods are making up, this is legal copyright rules. I wish we could copy at least the most helpful, most insightful posts, but we have to be in line legally first and foremost.

Just to be clear will the information other than that on the forums continue to be available through archives like the wayback machine?

rexroth, the answer to the question you asked is "yes". If something is currently accessible on the site and has been archived in the Internet Archive, you will be able to find it there. The answer to the question you didn't ask, but may have wanted to is... If it's not in the community area, it will remain active. Pigpen is not closing the site as a whole, just the community area. So Script's SSSSSS files will remain visible at www.squalorsurvivors.com/overcoming/specialareas/paperandfinances.shtml. You needn't go elsewhere to find them.

I thought all the old forums would remain as "read only" and that we wouldn't lose the information from SS. somebody please correct me if I misunderstand.

The thing about this that concerns me is that there seems to be a feeling that we are not capable of benefiting from our already extensive knowledge and font of wisdom by virtue of our common experience, without the written word we compiled elsewhere. As though we are not capable of re-creating or creating anew the knowledge base we collectively share.
True, it's nice to have reference material, but don't we already have a common problem collecting TOO MANY things, including reference material? Are we so afraid that we can't do with a little reference material and build upon that with each others' help?
I know that I am tempted to archive everything in my blog, and at least if I choose to do so, it's not so lengthy that it wouldn't be impossible. But if I were to attempt to archive everything I ever wrote on the SS boards (both old and older), it would take me so much time that I would undoubtably neglect my loved-ones, my health, my house and my business in order to get that enormous project completed. It simply is not worth the sacrafices or the effort. And in the end, I would have an enormous amount of data that would likely serve to feed my ego. My ego doesn't need that much feeding, as it isn't all that fragile to begin with.
Anyway, I just wanted to point out that we are a group of wise and experienced people here, most of us having come through the growth of the Squalor Survivors community. We can share our experiences as they affect us now and be just as strong and healthy as ever. We can re-discover ourselves in a whole new way, while utilizing what we have learned in the past. But we don't have to carry all of the past with us, we can let go of some of that data and it won't harm us to do so.
I have tremendous faith is us.

- The main Squalor Survivors website (the informational main site about stages of squalor, causes, book reviews, and Kimmy's photos and story, Fivecat's story,) etc -- will remain open for a long time. Click here to see what will remain: www.squalorsurvivors.com/
The places at Squalor Survivors where we talk with one another (the S.S. forums, blogs, and member galleries) will be read only from June 1-30, 2008. After that, they will vanish. Click here to see what will be frozen during June and then disappear on June 30: squalorsurvivors.com/community/default.aspx
Pigpen has said she will put a note on her main site listing where a new community has been set up.
