After I overworked my semi-broken ankle yesterday I dragged out my invention made from and old wool sock.
I call it the "bean sock" all you need is a real wool or all cotton sock..the one you have left after you lost the other..we all have them.
and ~50 cent 1lb bag of uncooked navy beans. Smaller dry beans don't hold heat as well, you can add a bit of lavender plant, or other I have not done so..
Fill the sock with as many beans as will fit. tie off with a ribbon or strip of cloth.
heat in microwave for 2-4 minutes, and drape it over a foot, or around your neck or shoulder.
I made this years before the fancy $$ barley? heat pillows they sell.. the best part is how flexible the long sock is. (a men's sock is great for larger surface heat)
I even rescued a teddy bear, no plastic eyes or metal bits on it, and planned to remove the belly stuffing, and insert the sock inside for giving to my friend's kids. (or any little fabric bag you may have.)
the beans can be reheated to practically forever until the sock falls apart I discovered.
I have used the heated sock, laying on it for my hip in bed, and the heat lasts at least 30 minutes.

We've done both beans and rice, just as you described, but we prefer using rice as oppose to beans. We felt the beans had sort of an unpleasant odor. Mr. 5 likes to use them to warm up his feet in the bed. Works great!
