I am preoccupied with my squalor. I have to work on it every day and cheer myself on, laugh at myself for the messes I make, and generally make myself aware of it on a regular basis so it doesn't get out of control. I have other pet projects too. One of them is growing my hair long. I have OCD and for years I compulsively cut it short. For the past two years I've been on a "hair journey" growing it out long. It's one of those things a person needs to be obsessed with like a squalor struggle. Other people would not understand. How about you? Any side projects which may seem eccentric to others?

Yes! I tend to get on "kicks." Right now I'm on a health food/ fitness kick/ mid-life crisis....as well as ....squalor elimination. I try to choose obsessions that will benefit me in the long run.

Midlife has been full of these spurs of action; I feel like if I don't get this stuff under control now I never will. It's true. It's a critical time in our lives. Anytime is a good time to address squalor but midlife lends itself to it. Midlife is when all of life's ugly realizations hit, I'm sorry to put it so negatively :0 It can be a cathartic time and a blessing though. Surely our families appreciate it ! They don't like it when we ask them to help but they're glad the house and surrounding areas aren't so "gross" anymore.

I'm like def6 above, getting on "kicks" of intense focus or interest in one thing, maybe a little ocd-ish but not to the point of interfering with my life (unless you count laundry and vacuuming, ). BUT I've discovered after half a century that I 'circle back around' to these things a few months or years later after the initial interest had worn off. A few things I haven't come back to and they end up 'boxed' or something, but one of the reasons my house is so full of 'stuff' is because each category is waiting for me to get interested in it again. (At least that's my excuse.)
