Hmm. Good question, tomzdadster. We used to be able to do this but we can't now, or so it seems. Let me do some more exploring.

thank you, tomzdadster for starting the thread, and Celeste for looking into this. i hope we can find a solution, as it seems to kick some people off the forum when you click "play," and you have to log back in. others' computers crash entirely. HEY GUYS! i'm so excited! i think i found a work-around for the videos showing up in the posts! NOTE: i played around with the link on a desktop computer. this may not work for mobile devices but let me know.
HERE is the STEP BY STEP process: i can't take a screen shot so i hope i can explain it. here are the steps, which i will do here to be sure it works: maybe Unswamping can help us with that? 1) first off, use "reply" instead of quick reply. that will get you the toolbar you need to insert a link into your post. 2) copy the link you want to paste into your message by highlighting, then rt. click "copy" or CTRL/C 3) instead of pasting directly into your post, go to the first image on the upper right that you see on your toolbar - it's the one with the blue ball and the document on the lower right of the blue ball (hover your mouse over it; it should say "link" - when you open it, it's a little box with a blue bar on top that says, "create link." 4)left-click to open that dialogue box. you will see two text boxes. the one on top will say "link". don't do anything to it. go to the text box below it where it says, URL and the text box starts with http:// 5) important: delete that http:// - because you are going to insert YOUR link there and it will have either http or https included. so do that now; insert your link in this lower text box. You can paste either by right clicking, then selecting "paste" or CTRL/V - not sure how this is done on portable devices, since this was done from a desktop! Then click on the blue button, bot. right of the dialogue box that says "create link" i used a metta meditation link to try it out. don't worry if it looks like code starting with: [a href="https: etc etc. It'll show up just as the word 'link' in blue (hyperlink to the video) when you do your final posting Like this: link6) next, post your post and see if it looks like this one, where it just says link in blue. you can click on that link and it takes you directly to youtube, where you can view the video.

Thanks again for starting this thread tomzdadster . creativechaos , I just tried your link and it worked on my old laptop! I was able to see that the video showed up (I linked into a new window) but had to close the window fairly quickly. I wasn't able to test out the audio, but it looks like you may have found a solution, at least for some computers.
Thank you very much for the time and good will you put into this for all of us! (Especially with computer problems.)
Thank you too Celeste for being available to field such questions.

Yes, just adding the URL (web address) of the video by using the add link button (that blue ball is the planet/world, as in world wide web) is how you add any link, whether to a video, image, or other website, to a post. When you're at Youtube's site, just highlight and copy the web address from the address bar of your video so you can paste it as a link here.
Also, for whoever wants to play a video that shows up in someone's post, Youtube videos usually show a little button (near the video controls) on the bottom with a swooshy arrow that says "play on Youtube." My browser tends not to play a lot of YT vids within some forums, so I just click that button and it opens up a new window or tab at Youtube's site and plays there. However, I tend not to click on videos and prefer that some kind of transcript, quote, or description of what is in the video also be included in a post that has one.
That being said, all I'm seeing of the video posted in the first post of this thread is a black box and no controls.

ty tomzdadster! it was fun to figure out. outfromundah, we were looking to post links without the videos showing up because for some of us it either crashes our computers or it boots us off of the boards. when i click on videos in someone's post, i get booted off of proboards and have to log back in. some of us have ancient computers so happy to find a solution that seems to work for you, tomz. it works for me as well... and i'm really happy that you could follow my long winded instructions, so that is good too. thanks for letting me know it works!

outfromundah, we were looking to post links without the videos showing up . . . Yes, I understood that you wanted a link and not an inline window of the video player. It's probably a good idea to provide both in a post, to make it accessible for more people. I mentioned the "play on Youtube" button for those times when the video does show in the forum. A lot of times for me, it won't play in the forum, but will on YT (new window or new tab), so that button is useful. It's the same as using a link - YT incorporates that option in their player window and it's there in most videos. Of course, that doesn't help if the video is hosted by Vimeo or somewhere else, but they might have a similar link button. Or are you saying that just opening a thread page with a video crashes your browser, not that clicking Play does it?

When I click onto a post that has open videos my computer freezes. I can open a video link in a new tab and my computer does not freeze.

linkcreativechaos your instructions worked for me. The only caveat was it pasted the address as https and not http, so the poster needs to paste the link and then delete the "s" in https. If it does paste as http, it is fine, no edit needed. If someone does post a link and there is an error message saying that it cant obtain a secure connection, click on the bar at the top (ie where it says yoube.com), that will display the entire address. Then delete the "s" in http and hit enter. The page should display correctly.

another related question for Celeste Is there a way in the search feature, to find all the images ive posted? Would i have to put in some text that might be in the same post? I can do some pretty sophicated searches but havent figured that on out yet. I would like to reupload any photos ive posted, after uploading them to an image service. I noticed a few are already om imgur, which unfortunately i cant access. Thanks in advance.

There is also the "spoiler tag" method. A spoiler tag is a button that covers/hides whatever you wish to hide --- it's designed for discussing movies/television/books -- any fictional storyline -- where you want to hide some of your words from those who prefer not to have any important plotpoints "spoiled"(revealed ahead of time). In this way, you can use the bulk of your post discuss the current storyline; but also insert a mention of what happens next week behind the spoiler tag. This way, all the readers can participate in reading your post, but they can individually decide if they want to know what happens next or not. All readers have to do is click on the spoiler tag, and it reveals what the poster had hidden. For example, suppose I want to say this: - "On yesterday's episode of XYZ television program, two university students talked about school, and I really enjoyed how their dialogue was written! Oh by the way, I saw an interview from the producer who says that this happens next week: They will kiss! I'm so excited!"
But I realize some people won't want to know about the kiss until they watch next week's episode. If I was on a discussion board discussing that TV program, I would post it like this so that everyone could read it: - On yesterday's episode of XYZ television program, two university students talked about school, and I really enjoyed how their dialogue was written! Oh by the way, I saw an interview from the producer who says that this happens next week:
They will kiss! I'm so excited!
Unfortunately, this currently has to be done in a way that you can't see in the "posting preview" if it worked or not. To do this you type
before the thing you want to hide and then you type
after the thing you want to hide. I think you can do the same thing with youtube videos. And the page seems to load faster with the videos hidden for some reason. People wanting to see the video INSIDE the forum post, can just click on the spoiler tag. Then you could also post SEPARATELY (and not inside the spoiler tag) ... the "LINK" method that creativechaos described, as an alternative method for those who prefer to view the video in a DIFFERENT TAB of the browser. Here is an example of what I described: Pretend the following is a sample forum post: -------------------------------------- Hello everyone! Behind the spoiler tag is a video about galaxies in the universe. When you click it will simply "unhide" the video which is embedded within this post. You won't be directed elsewhere. You can also view it by clicking on the following link which will open the youtube in a separate browser window or browser tab: link to video
