I'm so frustrated! I have several huge boxes (probably 18" x 18" x 18") that I've filled with stuff to get rid of. It is usable stuff (not trash) and I want to give it to charity so I can get a tax write-off. They're HEAVY and I can't pick them up to put in the car. Oh, I'm also getting rid of an extra stereo and entertainment center. So, I called around this morning to arrange a pick-up. I want to get all of it out of the house ASAP so I don't dwell on the idea of keeping it for a yard sale in the summer. Goodwill doesn't pick up stuff. The Salvation Army will pick it up, but not until the 19th. Grrrr! I guess I could post it on Freecycle and it will get gone quickly, but I won't get a tax deduction. I don't want to put it on Craig's list because I don't want people in the house and it's a hassle to haggle over money.

Not until the 19th?!?!?!? Wow, over here in LA they pick up within a day or two. You called in, you said. Did you try and schedule it on line? Maybe you could get it in sooner. Maybe the one that you called is short-handed, but the whole organization may have more people available to do pickups? Its a long shot, but you might want to try it. Just google: Salvation Army, Make a Donation.

I called our local Habitat for Humanity thrift store and had to leave a message for the guy that picks up stuff w/the truck. I hope he can come sooner than the 19th! If he can't, I'm not sure what other charities to call.

What's this tax deduction thing? Do you get it for donating your household goods to charity?

Yeah, the lucky buggers in America get a tax credit / deduction thing when they donate goods as well as money. We don't have it here, as far as I know. Just a good deed done. *sigh*

If you are in America, try posting your free items on freecyle.com or Craigslist under the Free column. Anything free on these sites usually are taken in a matter of hours.
