I have come across several bottles (pounds) of hazardous materials. I mentioned that my FIL was a chemist. Well apparently he brought stuff home from the lab with him. Do I call the fire department? I know they sometimes take paint and stuff. If that isn't enough how about my MIL specimens that were in formaldehyde.Stuff like a legless lizard and other pickled nasties. ***, this place is like cleaning up the Adam's family mansion!

Here we have pick up one day a month for hazardous stuff. You could try contacting the sanitation dept. They may have info on their website, too.

Since this is not ordinary "hazardous household waste", I think that contacting the fire department is a good idea. Hopefully, they know more about chemicals than most. You could contact a pharmacy, too. Also, you might consider contacting a university; they might be able to take the old chemicals off your hands (or at least, tell you what to do with them), and--who knows?!!--they just might have an interest in your MIL's specimens that are in formaldehyde.
Thank you for handling these materials responsibly. That is of benefit to all of us.

I would not like to encounter the 20 pounds of mercury in a ceramic jar with (of all things) a cork stopper in the top!
