Is there a way for me to set up my account so that emoticons and animations do not show up when I am reading posts?
I know a lot of people love them, but I *hate* them. Passionately. They are very distracting to me, especially when they are all over a post, and in the middle of paragraphs and such.
Now, this is *my* problem, so I am hoping to fix *my* reading experience, without forcing others to change the way they post. Because *I* own this, and it is no one's responsibility to change for me.

- Once you're logged on, go to top of page, and click on "profile".
You'll see the words "Member's Bio - Modify Profile - Bookmarks" right above your name.
Click on link that says "modify profile".
Scroll down and look where it says "show images" and select "no".
You can also tell it not to show avatars (a separate question on that profile list).

Will that turn off all images in the replies, including photos? I would hate to do that.

Yes, it will turn off all images, including photos, and all icons all over the board. What you will see will be placeholders like this: blah blah blah [image] blay blay blay [image] [image] [image]

sigh. Yeah, that was awful. I couldn't tell what threads had new posts, or anything.
I guess I'll just have to put up with the danged things

lettinggo, i empathize with your plight about smileys. it must be a chick thing; i have learned to like them, especially the animated ones. i hope you don't leave the boards because of the emoticons.
you could do what i did about an extremely regularly annoying situation in my life, a constantly yapping dog; write haikus! i worked through a lot of "stuff" writing those haikus. the dog still yaps, but i read those things and laugh.

I'm female, and I hate them, so ..... LettingGo, you currently have your gender displayed as "male". See your name to the left of your posts? At this moment, there's a symbol for maleness there, and the word male. It says: Joined: Jun 2008 Gender: Male Posts: 140 I think you decided to periodically randomly switch how your gender displays as per what was discussed in the "gender required" thread here: takeonestepatatime.proboards80.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=questions&thread=750So, since the notation to the left of your post said you were male, creativechaos assumed you were male. That being said, I would agree that gender would have NO bearing on whether somebody likes emoticons or not. Some people like them, and some people don't. That's all. Just my opinion. Probably relates to whether someone is a visual person, or how they like to read, or rightbrain/leftbrain concepts, or whether people like movement or not, or any number of factors that probably are fascinating topics for discussion -- (but I won't start such a discussion here on the tech forum) <giggle>. -

- There is a simply way to stop animated smileys from moving.
Once a thread has fully loaded onto your screen, just hit the "escape" key. It will freeze all smileys. You'll still see the images, but they won't be moving around on your screen.

UPDATE in the year 2013 -- the above 'escape key' trick still works in internet explorer, but there is a new way to do this for firefox ... see next page of this thread.

I was sooo offended at having to put in a gender, I opted to lie! Thanks!
Or has ADD, or is just an old techie who likes ascii. (-:

Aaaahhh - great tip! I'm so glad I read this thread! I'm anti-emoticon myself, but the board is such a valuable resource (and you all seem like such lovely people) that I've just been grinning and bearing it. I have adapted to board cultures over the course of my time on the internets and will break out the occasional or " ", occasionally, though.

Stop that! You did not offend me! I've not been on the board for a couple of weeks, or I would have told you that much sooner!
And really. STOP SAYING THOSE THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF. That is lousy self-talk, and it is just the kind of thing that tells us we don't deserve to live in a nice environment, because we are scum.
So there.
