I need this thread! Thank you for re-starting it, Unswamping.
I have 4 cats and out of control poo/pee situation.
I just posted on WIT thread and then saw this thread which is just what I need. I swept up old messes in one part of dining room, upstairs hallway and then changed liner under box and scooped box. Much more to do in this area including ripping up carpet and addressing damage to floors, but the main thing was getting started.
I need to scoop daily so I will be back tomorrow after doing it. Must make it a habit.

Okay I did some today! I even brought the broom upstairs this time. They are not perfect but it's making a difference.

sweetsunshower great job on scooping, changing liner, and sweeping. Great job on getting started on old messes, i know from experience thats hard work. I have four kitties too.
momof3boys great job on getting started. Its doesnt have to be perfect, just good enough. I keep a little dustpan and dust broom in the "cat closet" right near the litter pans, it helps. Walmart has one in the camping section for about $3. It fits together and is easy to hang (i put a command hook on wall right inside closet).
I skipped scooping yesterday. I did scoop and sweep today. Dirty litter is in outside trash can. Plus i washed out two litter pans. Hopefully i can get back on track with washing two a day.

Thanks, Unswamping!
I have been very distracted but I am here to say that I did scoop and sweep when I came home at lunch time.
I don't even know how I am going to remediate the cat pee damage but I guess getting into the routine of daily box cleaning is going to help from one angle.
Thanks to everyone posting on here. Just nice to know I am not alone with this struggle. I have a lot of shame about the extent of the situation.
The plan is to scoop right after work tomorrow.

sweetsunshower great job n scoop and sweep at lunchtime. You are right about getting into the routine of scooping and sweeping. Unless there are behavioral/medical issues, cats really do prefer litter pans as long as they are kept clean. So by keeping up with the daily scoop/sweep, you are preventing the damage from getting worse. As for the damage thats already occured, there are threads here about how to undo it. You are definetely not alone in this struggle. I understand the shame. Got that tee shirt. I wouldnt talk to a neighbor or coworker about the situation, but here on the forum, there are alot of cat owners. Alot of us have dealt with those issues in the past or are dealing with them now. So you arent alone.
I scooped and sweeped. Washed two litter pans out. Took the dirty litter out and put in the trash can at the curb. Yay i changed the litter before they picked up! Boo, the bag fell out when they emptied the can into the truck. So when i went out to bring the trash can back up to the house, my nice tidy, tied up bag of dirty litter was sitting in the middle of the road. Grateful that it was windy and went out to get the trash can before i normally would have. I was able to retrieve the dirty litter bag before someone ran it over.

Thanks, Unswamping. Boo@ your garbage collectors dropping the bag in to the street!
I think I did not scoop on Wednesday after work, but I did scoop, sweep and change liner yesterday. So the plan is, scoop and sweep tonight. Plus, earlier my eyes very casually fell upon an area of dried messes in the corner of the dining room, previously ignored/unseen. Going to clean that up.
Like a lot of people, I have some pain/mobility issues that complicate the clean up...but I also want to start pulling up/cutting up carpet. The plan is to roll it up in small pieces and bag up, just small sections at a time, then take to dump a few bags at a time. I am thinking of the movie Shawshank Redemption, how the main character chipped away at the cement wall every evening, and carried the debris out to the prison yard in his pants pockets, every day for years until voila, he broke free. It's a good lesson for me that progress is possible.
Main thing for now is litter box maintenance. It's just so much easier to frequently scoop and not end up having to dump out the entire heavy box into a bag etc. What a pain. So I am enjoying that and using it as motivation to get on top of the scooping (in addition to the fact that it is healthier for the cats etc).

i'll join in on this! im good at getting the cat boxes scooped/changed out once a week totally cleaned but i need to continue to do it more often, and when i go in to the cat litter room to do it i make sure to sweep and mop the floor and keep the room clean for my kitties. I am going to aim to get this done every night though this coming week now that im settled into a better routine. I;ll clean out the boxes tomorrow first thing and get the trash out to the curb asap. i need to empty the trash in the living room and kitchen and get laundry done too so that just adds to the chores

Hi phoebepj Glad you have joined the thread. It is helping me to have this place to check in about this particular subject. So I just spent too many hours laying around watching old episodes of Roseanne but finally surfaced. It's almost 2 am so I really should be in bed anyway but that is another story. I fed and watered the furry four, then I scooped, topped off with fresh litter, quick sweep and changed one of the liners. SO nice to take that one small bag of waste and put it inside regular trash. I am not feeling great about everything else that needs attention but the plan is to scoop and sweep again tomorrow evening.
