I don't know if this will help anyone, but years ago, when I was a child, we are talking dark ages now, we lived in a house without any closets, none. My Mom created a closet using the corner of a room, and an old broom handle, and a curtain. She had Dad cut the ends at a 45 degree angle to where it aligned with the wall, she hung this about a foot below the ceiling, she then had him put a nail bent to form a hook a few inches past the ends of the stick, but at just an inch below the ceiling and then she stretched a wire that she had run through the curtains and attached and stretched the wire to where it was taut, creating a curtain rod. She now had a place to hang clothes, hide shoes, etc..

How clever! and when i was in student housing, with hardly any built in closet space, my roommate and i put our locker-like armoirs back to back (instead of leaving them against the wall) with a space between them and hung a drape over them and we stashed our suitcases and other stuff in that space.
