I have typed in the http when I get the "not secure" message, but it's not staying there. It is only showing as not secure when I go to type something.
I am in IE, and the problem just started this afternoon. I'm going to keep this short, because it's showing "not secure" now.

Hi seashell, In general, HTTP is not secure, but HTTPS is secure. I usually don't see http or https on my URL bar when I visit here, but when I entered https:// in front of takeonestepatatime.proboards.com, it stays. Try that and see what happens. It could also be a browser issue or something going on with your internet service, and not necessarily this site.

Thank you papermoon and outfromundah. I have typed in the "https" and it is staying. The word "secure" in the url address has disappeared, but it seems like this has worked. I'll be back if it stops working!

Mine is showing the same. It seems it is a Google change in naming sites www.wired.com/story/google-chrome-https-not-secure-label/ City-data, spades, and others have shown up the same. I could change from CHrome to another browser but that would not make the website any safer. It is the same as http was.

I agree with beesnest. There's nothing wrong with your computer. All you really need to know is that all is well. If you are curious about a technical explanation, keep reading. If you don't care about the technical explanation, feel free to skip the rest of this post. I've started seeing it recently it on my computer in both firefox and chrome -- whenever I go to a website that DOESN'T start with https https is more secure. The default for most websites is that they start with http (not https). It's such a default that you don't have to type it. If you type into your browser example.com your browser will convert that to http://example.com And it happens seamlessly, so we don't have to think about it. It used to be that https (with the "s" on the end) was used only for special things, like banking and other sensitive password-protected sites. When purchasing anything online, make sure the payment page is https But otherwise, most sites are just http. However... Lately there has been a gradual movement to encourage all websites to switch over to https Most aren't switching yet; but it may come eventually. Now some browsers will give you a "courtesy warning" when you start to go to an "http" site (a site without "https") and it warns you that you could be entering an insecure site. Basically, if it's insecure, don't be inputting your social security number or any financial information. For example, Chrome started doing those "courtesy warnings" effective July 2018. Here is the info on that: www.theverge.com/2018/2/8/16991254/chrome-not-secure-marked-http-encryption-sslProboards default is http outfromundah 's suggestion to simply put https in the front is a clever solution.

Thank you so much beesnest and CourageouslyLion SeeksSerenity! I'm really glad to know it's not my computer. I just have to remember to add the https when I log in. That's easy enough. It's so good to have people in here who know what they are doing! Thank you for the technical explanation, Lion. I do like to know why things work the way they do!

Thanks for the info. I am currently switching from IE to Chrome, so this is helpful. I tried to find the SOOS board the other day. Now, I will be able to find it.

Typing "https" in front of the URL is not a solution. The site is still unsecure if you do that, at least Firefox browser indicates that it is unsecure even with https:// typed in front of the URL.
The issue is not only that you should not enter private stuff like your social security number, but also that rogues could install malware on your computer. Hence it would be great if this board implemented https as soon as possible.

The question of ProBoards security (we are hosted on ProBoards) is asked frequently these days. This thread to the question on ProBoards Support is in answer they give. Sensitive information like logins and any payments for advance features are handled on secure pages. Plans are being implemented to make all page connections secure, but the date hasn't been revealed. Malware can't be installed here without heavy-duty site hacking, which is something that has never happened to ProBoards. Links COULD be made to malware sites, but we (the admins of SOS and ProBoards) are watching for that and will delete those links if they arise. Your personal antivirus software is also a protection.
I wouldn't worry about it unduly. It is as safe as it has ever been.
