joyinvirginia , how close to the coastline are you? I just read tonight that South Carolina's governor has ordered mandatory evacuation of the state's entire coastline. For some mysterious reason, Trump is tweeting that Alabama will be hit hard by Dorian... huh???

We are in east central virginia, 80 something miles from Virginia Beach and Atlantic ocean, 60 ish miles from Chesapeake Bay. I'm officially terrified of this monster. its awful what is happening to the Bahamas right now. People do not realize, the eye doesn't have to make landfall for the hurricane and tropical storm force winds, along with the deluge of rain, to make life 1000% miserable for folks in the path. Oh, and the mosquito swarms after the storm passes, can't forget them! Bobbi Storms who blogs at Hurricane Harbor is still worried it may continue west. She states the obvious, the models are only as good as the data entered into the computers. Mike at spaghettimodels.com is very worried about the track. He is in Clearwater FL on the west coast. I've been staying calm by reading the facebook accounts someone created for hurricane Florence of 2018, and the facebook account of hurricane Dorian right now. the two hurricanes are insulting one another about which one is the baddest. Hurricane Dorian reminded everyone to bring their animals inside, because she doesn't want PETA on her case. Here is a funny one: Hurricane Dorian: I'm going to Jacksonville. US Southeast Coast: Florida or North Carolina? Hurricane Dorian: YES! When you are dealing with things like this, you can cry or panic or laugh. Laughter at least breaks the tension.

Yeah, right. I do admire your spirit though. Here's my joke:
If I were living in the Bahamas right now, I wouldn't be living. I'd already be dead from a heart attack.
I can't imagine the terror those poor people are going through. In addition to the regular Hurricane Center updates every 3 hours, they are now issuing intermediate updates. Here's the latest... OMG! Wind gusts over 200 mph!

it feels weird that we're not forecast to even get any rain. I'm sorry y'all are having to deal with this again.

MLS, does this list include you? It's a tweet Sunday night from GA governor Brian Kemp ordering mandatory evacuation on Monday:

We were in Hilton Head in Beaufort South Carolina Carolina week on vacation, came home Friday. that area is under mandatory evacuation orders starting today at noon. the coastal region of SC is called "the low country" because its low and swampy and floods with the least little bit of higher tides. Dorian sitting still over the Bahamas is the worst thing that could happen to them. They will need massive help after this disaster.

no, I am north of Atlanta, so no worries. I-95 is pretty close to the coast. I saw that tweet, thanks to the link you provided, papermoon! I wish we could provide shelter, but this week we will be packing up stuff to install carpet, so don't have room.
it is so heartbreaking, joyinvirginia! is your daughter in a potential evacuation zone again?

joyinvirginia i totally get the humor. I know you take this very seriously but humor does help alleviate some of the stress. Ive been watching the spaghetti models and it concerns me that all the european models having it going west. They tend to be more accurate than the us models, go figure. Im hoping they are wrong and it heads out east.
mylittlescholar im glad you are well away from the coast.
Praying for the bahamas. Sadly there will loss of life since not everyone was evacuated. The last boat just couldn't hold anymore before the weather got too bad to sail. There were people left behind. The destruction is devastating and will take them years to recover.

The Bahamas are complete disaster areas! mylittlescholar, our house and my daughters live in areas that are on high ground. younger dd teaches in a county that routinely closes school if there is flood threat. I have a lot of family living in areas that are prone to flooding, so keeping up with them. I'm not panicked, just obsessively checking updates from National Hurricane Center every 3 hours.

joyinvirginia , on the NHC home page, hover over the red Dorian icon and click on the pop-up. On the resulting page, in teeny tiny type toward the top, you will see "Discussion"... click for in-depth details. Also in teeny type, you may see "Update"... these have more details and are posted hourly in-between the regular 3-hour reports. I don't think the people in the Bahamas are finding any humor in it. Dorian's westward movement has slowed down to a virtual standstill and is grinding the Grand Bahama island relentlessly. The NHC is no longer reporting movement of 1 mph, but rather, "stationary" at this point. When Dorian finally moves over water again, it will pick up more force and wind speed again. A good number of people in Florida are heeding the warnings, and the shelters are already filling up. www.theguardian.com/world/live/2019/sep/02/hurricane-dorian-category-5-storm-bahamas-florida-south-north-carolina-updates

Thanks papermoon, I already go to the NHC site and check out all the projections and models every bad storm of every hurricane season. I used to have a map with latitude and longitude I could track storms moving across the Atlantic, I'm not that obsessive anymore! My dad was merchant marine and taught me a lot about hurricanes. the hurricaneharbor.blogspot.com is a really good blog and refers to historical storms, it's fascinating.
editing to add: Seagreen Gallery, store in Nags Head NC in the Outer Banks, posted photos at 10 pm Monday night of the TV crews that have arrived and are taking to owners of ther Surfin' Spoon a yogurt shop next door to Seagreen. We go to OBX a lot and they have evacuation, Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke, for visitors starting Tuesday and evacuation for residents starting Wednesday.

My DD is in the path (again - just like last year and they got hit hard). She is in Wilmington NC. Her school is closed to students on Tuesday but teachers go in. It is closed to all on Thurs and Friday. Even though she is 30 and traveling with a roommate - I still worry for them. this is her third or 4th evacuate time. joyinvirginia....Hilton head is one of my favorite places to go!

fascinating that you dad was a merchant marine, joyinvirginia. I've only been on the sea once, and I absolutely loved it. I feel very fortunate to have seen some of the islands before these devastating hurricanes started, but now I know better what has been lost.
