When I first posted 2 weeks ago I was rather excited about trying to start working on my chosen projects in this thread and post here. And then 1.5 days later (horror of horrors!) my apartment announced a random inspection for my apartment complex (for the first time since Feb). I had 4 days notice and I worked for 4 days. I got many things straight but I had too much clutter to actually be inspection ready. On inspection day, after lunch my apartment was chosen and two men I've never seen before showed up with a maintenance man at the door. I opened the door and I was as pleasant as I could manage . The maintenance man said, "Don't worry, it's not about cleanliness!" He knows I try to clean but have a history of being a borderline case . Both of the men were very nice and friendly and reassured me saying, we'd like to go in and take a few photos of building structure but we don't care AT ALL what it looks like in there." So halfway embarrassed and halfway relieved, I let them in and one man took some pictures of some windows and bathroom fixtures and one took pictures in the kitchen.
All in all it was good that it happened. I did get the floors mostly cleared with larger walkways, but I still have piles of clothes I was not able to deal with. It was a wake-up call because if it was an actual inspection I wouldn't have been able to pass even though I worked my butt off for 4 days. I was able to do enough that it was easy for people to move around and I was not completely humiliated, but it was still not what I would call presentable. On the bright side, one of my goals in my post was filing, and I dealt with paper filing, shredding, and tossing for about 8 hours on the overflow piles with no home. I do need to keep going and deal with the paper on desk/table so that I can work toward goal #4 of reclaiming some work space.
Another of my goals I posted was organizing Christmas stuff. When I was clearing out living room clutter, I found some xmas lights, and I was mindful after my post and I carefully bagged these up and put them in the right place. I also found last year's xmas card list in my paper pile and I put this where I can find it again.
Work got very busy last week and this week for the end of summer session but I will be off for a few weeks and trying to work on home again. And I did get a jump start by the events.

I need to buckle down more to achieve my posted goals. I've finally written them on cardboard to be more visible. I've been doing more outside stuff, but I still need to do the math to see where I'm at. Some of the bigger things are delayed due to not having the right tools atm. Thanks to all for participating & continuing to work towards your goals!

Bedroom clear dresser top clear armchair figure out a way to keep wardrobe doors closed nest suitcases move backpacking stuff to hall closet take office stuff to desk straighten (w/dividers) & cull nightstand
look at bookshelf--anything I'm ready to let go?
recycle or consolidate empty boxes get rid of jewelry box? order comforter to put in new duvet cover put new comforter in cover put together cubby modules straighten & cull dresser #1 Drawer #1 is organized with dividers. straighten & cull dresser #2 Drawer #2 has been emptied and appropriate contents put in. give away Legos clean windows--panes, sills, blinds clear floor move some stuff (what?) to underbed storage dust ceiling, walls, pictures vacuum edges and corners put boxes of papers in LR, one at a time, to go through One box in LR, just barely started.
Desk Project This is such a mess that it's hard to divide into sections, so I'm not going to put this in list format. Basically, I am moving stuff around and culling so that I can use the actual desk as my desk rather than the table I'm using now. So far I have partially emptied one drawer to make room for some stuff that is sitting on top to go inside. The piles on top are getting smaller.
We have a little short of four weeks to make the deadline, so I believe both of these projects are still doable. Just need to make the time and persevere!

Three more items progressing: 8) See if I have anyplace to dump all these donations I'm gathering up. My monthly cleaners took 85% of them and I have found a few places open to drive through and drop the rest. 10) my ongoing project of "hanging stuff" - I have half a closet of "things to hang" in the other guest room - also a dump site. I've moved them out of their storage - sorted into "ready to hang" (now in the office) and "needs work" - going to basement to store at the newly created work stations. Also donated some and I'm sure there is more that can go. 12) set up the exercise area in the basement Finished this last weekend. Just need a "refresher course" from DH on using the electronics - DVD player and Apple TV. I also did a mini-purge and brought up two bins of things to either donate or belong upstairs. And, opened up all the boxes down there and removed all the packaging. Our cleaners helped us move out the disconnected TV!!! I think this weekend I want to finish our master closet which will include the hall closet as well. BONUS - I did not like my at home office set-up which is in a room that can't house a regular desk and monitor. The other furniture in there is too large. So, I repurposed a guest room into my at home office - brought my big monitor home - bought a desk with a pull out keyboard. It's cozy BUT SO MUCH BETTER. Definitely not getting through all of this by Labor Day but baby steps! PC

goldenthreads, nice job on your desk project & reducing those piles so that you can use the table & desk for their intended purpose. ~~~~ phoenixcat, on getting those donations out. Wonderful job repurposing the guest room into a home office! This thread will continue on as a "holiday chaser" so there is still time to continue to reach for our goals. I finally remembered to pick up living gloves & paper towels so I'm getting closer to cleaning my oven! My outdoor goals keep getting delayed by having a full house next door, but I'm working parts of projects when I can. Continued good wishes to all & good luck! Thanks for your continuing efforts towards achievement!

My desk project is complete! Maybe I should say it is as complete as it needs to be right now. I bought a lamp yesterday and put it on the desk to celebrate (I actually needed it for decent lighting). There are some boxes under the desk, but enough was removed for knee room for me. I am astonished at how much better I feel working there rather than at the table. Just 1.5" lower made a huge difference in comfort. I'd thought my discomfort at the table was just psychological, and that was why my comfy chair was always calling. Nope, it was mostly physical discomfort, and I can use the same wooden chair as before and work quite a while at the desk. Don't need to buy the perfect office chair after all! Forgot to mention--yes, of course the desktop is a smooth, mostly empty expanse!
The table is now being used as a sorting station, one of its new functions. I have my recycling container and wastebasket on top, and boxes for "undecided" and "file," as well. There is also my filing bin with hanging folders. The "file" box is emptied every so often and is empty right now.
No recent progress to report on the bedroom project.

I am considering cheating via shuffling. I am thinking of moving all boxed papers from bedroom to living room. I could fit four boxes under the coffee table without making it look much worse than it is now, and have the peace of a bedroom cleared of this stuff. | |

Going into the last weekend Status update: 1) finish master closet - which means clothes, shoes, accessories. As well as the three bins of too small and vintage stuff which brings me to: ] finished last weekend2) in the "good" guest room - go through the closet and dresser. Relocate DM's stuff to her hoard that I have stored in the basement. And, sort through the e-waste pile and get it semi-organized for DH to designate what can officially go. Then, I can move the vintage/retro clothes into the guest room dresser. started - cleaned out the dresser, 1 bin ready to move to basement - not putting retro clothes here - too many - left in master closet bins 3) finish office - go through 2 more bookcases, a large dresser, 2 drawer file cabinet, desk drawers (7) and the closet which isn't bad. Has a very large stack of stuff that "came with the house" and I think most can be shredded. I have one small bin of stuff that needs to be filed once the desk is done. no - but hoping to work on #10 which is currently being stored there4) Do my family room shift which currently houses all the barware, the serving dishes, the "good" dishes and the linens. Plus I have an entertainment unit full of knick-knacks. done done done5) get personal and business taxes to the accountant which will mean a big scale down and organization of paperwork. next week?6) do DM's taxes - also a big scale down of paperwork next week?7) Release a bunch of "to do" emails - either acknowledge I'm never going to deal with it or actually deal with it. about 50% done on this8) See if I have anyplace to dump all these donations I'm gathering up. cleaners took about 85% - I've found other sites accepting stuff just need to get it out9) work on storage room - I did a major purge in there when I moved all my holiday stuff around so it isn't too horrid. Once again - donations - where are they going? need a much cooler weekend - later in the month?10) my ongoing project of "hanging stuff" - I have half a closet of "things to hang" in the other guest room - also a dump site. my target for the long weekend 11) hall closet and other entertainment unit in living room - both aren't too bad. hall closet was done last weekend - hoping to finish the living room this weekend12) set up the exercise area in the basement done done done except for using it
Baby steps! PC

One entire side of floor, countertop and cabinets. And, get out the stuff that can go - hazardous waste/ recycling. 10) my ongoing project of "hanging stuff" - Out of 12 items - fully finished 4. Four items of the above list are "started". sidestep continuing this?

Most of what remains is deep cleaning and the dressers.
