Hello, from looking at the "hoarder clutter image rating" pictures I'd say I'm usually at about a 3, give or take one point depending on the room. I've lived alone for several years and I feel isolation and depression contributes to it, but I'll be moving in with my boyfriend soon and don't want this impacting the relationship in any way. I'd really like this move to be a fresh start and my own decision to change, with no secret hoarding (in my car for example) or codependent/controlling dynamics.. Like, I just don't want knowing he might be upset to be the only reason I'm keeping things in check, if that makes sense.
I've had and overcame other (substance) addictions, so hoarding seems to be a mild problem in comparison.. but nevertheless it needs to be acknowledged and I know I need support. It's interesting that it's considered a form of OCD. I've never had the money for any kind of shopping/collecting addiction, but I'll keep meaningless items such as stacks of papers and empty packaging for no reason whatsoever. So the issue is releasing items and keeping up with daily tasks.
Most of my furniture was delivered in boxes that were much too large to put out with the regular trash, I've kept them in my laundry room for years and finally in the process of breaking them down and driving to a nearby apartment complex that has a large enough dumpster. That's arguably my biggest task, but I still need to work on the dishes, clothes and random papers.. I move in July and need to give my landlord 30 days notice, so everything should be at least clean and presentable by the end of the month. I hope checking in here as I make progress might be helpful. thanks for reading!

Welcome!.... no matter the issues we come here with or to address, someone here will have s similar or exact experience to talk with about; and sharing how you are feeling, or working thru issues in a place where you know we 'get it' is a relief.
One of the best things I learned about was giving onself 'amnesty' over 'things'- things to throw away, or not try to save/sell/recycle/keep perfect/save for some future life we are not going to be living.
Putting others, (and ourselves!) and relationships OVER 'possessions is often a goal.
Wishing you the best as you enter into a new living situation...hope your summer goes swimmingly...and please keep posting!

Thank you for your replies @h2h and NewLifeToday !! I cleaned out my fridge today, ashamed of how bad I let it get.. there were dishes in there from months ago that I've been avoiding cleaning. Washed most of them but did actually decide to throw a couple out rather than trying to salvage them. My kitchen is still messy but at least the hardest part is done. I've already made 3 trips to the dumpster with collapsed cardboard and empty packaging, and still need to do one more tomorrow. This all seems to be taking longer than I was hoping.. but I'll just have to keep working at it every day.

You're doing great so far! Cleaning out the fridge is major, so give yourself credit where it's due. That's an important part of keeping up your own morale. And we're here to cheer for you, too.

Hello desertmoon Welcome here! You are already off to a great start. I know those big boxes are cumbersome to deal with... but you found a way!! Way to go!! Motivation follows action as well as when you have a hunny to share life with..you don't want "stuff or a dirty mess" to deal with when you have better things to do.
