How to go to a thread you had been reading, and be taken to where you left off, -- to arrive at the "first unread post".
Here is an OPTION to help you find this: clicking the middle of the "new" button on the forum menu.
This is just a tool that some members find saves them time.
But of course, you don't have to do this.
Each of us thinks and functions differently, and that's fine.

Thank you very much! I started reading this, and thought there was nothing new to me, until I got to the part where you talk about clicking in the middle of the button to get to the next post on the thread. Oh, what a time-saver. I do read blogs, and then stop for a while. This'll be great! Thanks.

How to go to a thread you had been reading, and be taken to where you left off, -- to arrive at the "first unread post".The forum is set up so that it knows what is the first unread post for YOU. If you have been reading while logged in, it knows where you left off reading in each thread. This is helpful and saves time. Here is a sample piece of a forum menu:Here is a sample piece of a forum menu: Notice the "new" button to the left of some (but not all) thread titles. The button is very TINY, so you may not be knowing what to look for. The default "new" button is blue. But if you have a special color scheme/theme/skin for how you view the forums, then the "new" button might display as a different color. But if you have a special color scheme/theme/skin for how you view the forums, then the "new" button might display as a different color. Here are some examples of colored "new" buttons on special-color backgrounds: This "new" button appears on THREAD TITLES, if you are looking at a single forum MENU.Can't see it? I've added some arrows: This is especially helpful if you've been following a LONG thread, such as a blog. If you are registered and logged in, the "new" button will take you directly to where you left off reading ... VERY IMPORTANT: You have to click directly in the CENTER of the tiny "new" button ... for it to work. VERY IMPORTANT: You have to click directly in the CENTER of the tiny "new" button ... for it to work. HAVE TO CLICK IN THE CENTER OF WORD "NEW". If you click slightly off, it will send you to the BEGINNING of the thread. And ... if you go to the beginning of the thread, the automated software will somehow think you've read all the posts in the thread. So, if you're careful, it will work about 80% of the time. That's all you really need to know. ---------------------------------------- (if you want more detailed info about how it works, and why it sometimes might not work, keep reading):

It saves SO much time!
For example, If you were reading a blog and left off reading on page 72 at a certain post, --- And then logged out .... The next time you log in, if there are 40 new posts on that particular thread, it will send you to the very next UNREAD post on that thread.
It (invisibly) saves within your profile the location of the last post on every thread you've read. So that the next time you log in, you can begin reading any newly incurred posts on that thread. --- ERRR, perhaps I didn't explain it well ... it seems to send you to wherever you left off reading!. I have no clue how it knows this.
It doesn't always work in the way you might want ... because if you were in the MIDDLE of a thread, it might not know which post you last viewed, but it might send you to the first post that was added to the end.
Another variable is if new posts are being added by someone onto the thread, whilst you're in the middle of reading that very thread ... the software wouldn't be able to tell you that.
And if you accidentally or intentionally go to the beginning of a thread, or to a specific page on the thread (without using the new button) ... then the forum software MIGHT think you've read the entire thread all the way to the end, so far. And then you'll have to manually figure out where you left off reading. But then it might work later on. (hard to explain).
To sum up: Click on the center of the tiny "new" icon. It will work, most of the time.
If there is no "new" button on a thread, then you are *probably* all caught up reading that thread.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE ... the only thing it WON'T do is take you back to a post that someone has EDITED.
For example: With "to-do lists", if someone has a SINGLE post that she is updating with EDITS all day long, the "new" button won't take you back to her old edited post. It will instead take you to any brand new posts on her thread.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: If you have NOT clicked on the thread for several weeks or months, it forgets where you left off, and the "new" button does not work, so you get sent to the beginning of the thread. So then you have to use your mind the old-fashioned way to figure out where you left off.
But otherwise, it really works!

.
Just an fyi...
Some members find it easy to track which posts they've read by "liking" (giving a "thumbs-up") to every post they read.
That's totally fine if you enjoy doing that.
But what if you don't want to "like" every post you read? Using the "new" button could help with that.

Oh, what a time-saver. I do read blogs, and then stop for a while. This'll be great! Thanks. I had to re-post due to formatting issues, which is why my directions ended up below your post. And yeah, clicking the MIDDLE of the button is the key. It took me a while to figure out how to train my hand to click my mouse in the right spot, but now I do it easily. CLARIFICATION -- doesn't have to be the exact middle of the button, but it needs to be ON the button and not to the side.

WOW!!
I had *NO* idea any such feature exists!!
Thank you, Lioness, for "educating" me.
You did a *great* job of explaining how this feature works!
I really do appreciate it.
