Where to begin? Chronic pain & first a divorce was round one of a home falling apart. 3 years ago I was able to get help with the mess & all was well, until the pandemic. At the same time my health took a hit too, I was a caregiver to my partner who also had squalor issues & I helped sort his home out before he died last year. Roll to present day. My home has trash, my partners dog that I took on made the living room partially a toilet & my own dog regressed. It’s been too long my kitchen sink hadn’t ran water meanwhile my bathroom has a leak & I’m terrified of more projects piling up because I’m too scared to let someone in because my home feels overwhelming to me I have one 14 year old at home too. My habits have sort of rolled off to him & the shame… I’m looking at getting help in again but financially I’m not sure… Just so overwhelmed. I go around in circles. I make some progress then my health has a hit until next time I feel able to work on the home. It’s so isolating

journey2 - you're not alone! I find that overwhelm is the enemy. Doing one thing is what breaks that feeling of paralysis. Put wastebaskets in every room, lined with trash bags. And paper towels handy. Start with dog poo and trash. Worst first. One thing at a time.

Hello! You are stronger than you think, and you CAN do this. larataylor gave the perfect advice - trash and dog poo out first. One action is likely to lead to another and another and another. Can you set a timer for 5 minutes and work at trash collection for just five minutes, asking your son to grab a trash bag and do the same? I have chronic pain, too, so I understand it makes it harder. However, I believe we can still do things - we just have to take breaks and listen to our bodies.

Hello and welcome journey2Bag obvious trash and get it to the outside. Dog poo in the outside trash too. Maybe your child can help. Clean out the underneath of the kitchen sink and the kitchen sink itself. Call somebody that can help you with this. You can close off everything from the front door to the area to be worked on. Or do what a lot of people do now... Watch you tube videos to diagnose the problem find out where to get the tools and materials and then fix it if it does not require a plumber.

journey2 you are not alone anymore! Lots of us have been there. I have chronic pain and health issues that make it hard to clean up and I feel overwhelmed easily. Do just one thing. Pick up the easiest poop (the oldest, btdt) or the freshest. Bag it up. Rest if you need to. Then do another. Focus on dog poop and food trash first, those are the grossest.
Do you know why the kitchen sink doesn’t have water? Is there a leak? Is it just that the shut off valve is turned off? Checking the shutoff would be my first guess, kind of like checking if something is plugged in when it doesn’t work. Seems obvious but many times people forget to plug something back in or turn something on. No shame in that, happens to everyone. Do the faucet leak? Replacing a washer is an easy repair most people can do them selves. Where is the leak in the bathroom? Under the sink, in the tub/shower, the toilet, pipes? Having working plumbing makes it easier to clean.
There is a thread somewhere about dealing with pet stains. I’m sure someone can link it. (I can’t from my iPad). There is also a thread in the Favories section on the BDG method of cleaning. BDG, a former member, had chronic health issues, she documented her method for cleaning up her house. It’s been very useful for many of us, including myself.

journey2 - I can relate to dealing with chronic pain and becoming overwhelmed. I agree just doing a few minutes of the dog poop and food garbage is where to start. I have found what really works for me is posting what I have done and what I want to do really helps motivate me and keep me going.
