Yes scholar, I was so happy to hear from her because during our last phone call she sounded horrible. It seems like it's been one good call and then one bad--I'm hoping that this means she will have some steady improvement now.

I'm tired and not sure what is where. Almost posted this on the weekday thread where I saw Bethel is back. back, good to see you!
reve on not taking those children's classics books!!!! I could not have resisted those. I LOVE children's books and am already regretting some that we gave away yesterday. The blue/green iridescent jacket would have been too hard for me to pass up also.
Diane, this probably isn't the bookstore you are thinking of; it is Wonder Book and they only have 3 locations in Maryland. Today DD1 and I drove to their biggest store (not where we sold) because ....... well because it's a bookstore and WE LOVE BOOKS!!!!!!!! We died and went to heaven. I have NEVER seen such a collection. I kept thinking and telling DD1, "Oh, Diane would LOVE to be in here!" If my back wasn't so bad we would have stayed for hours. I was regretting not taking the store credit, I could have done some serious damage in there!
reve I found a huge cart of Little Golden Books. I had an armful before I even went thru half of the top shelf. The whole display was conveniently at child's level. Finally I put them all back. I know I still have many of those and they will turn up. I think most of them are still in the kids' bedrooms. They were originally 39 cents and were selling for $4 each. That's a 1,000% markup.
Diane, I was extremely happy to see that they had a massive collection of military books. Every single war you could think of but the most amazing part was these books were from those time periods as much as possible. There were beautiful old, old books, oversized and falling apart with pictures of war planes and battle plans from WWII. Books from the Civil War, I have special interest in that. I am not generally a war person but my father was in the military and very patriotic and instilled a great respect in his children for all the brave men and women who have ever fought for our freedoms. In locked glass cases they had hundreds of extremely old books selling for hundreds of dollars. So many books with fabric and leather covers. Truly beautiful and I was so very happy to see how the people there honored these treasures. Now I am very happy I rescued all those old military books from my friend's deceased father. The manager said he would love to have them. It makes me so happy to know that all the books I find so heart wrenching to get rid of will be well taken care of there and will eventually find a loving home.
mylittlescholar I read way too late into the night too. It is such a nice time to read.
bree thanks, DD1 and I do have wonderful times together! We do make a great team but that is all her doing. She is the easiest, sweetest person in the world, always upbeat and encouraging. It makes me feel absolutely like a horrible person when I get snappy with her. I always apologize almost immediately and she always says, "That's ok Mommy, you get a little p*ssy when you hurt. I know you don't mean to be a snappy turtle." haha I totally get being confused. My days have been crazy and even with things written down, my brain can't hold it all. I hope you get some good rest and get a good reset.
Diane, glad to hear your shopping friend seems to be improving, I hope it continues.
p.s. we got out of the bookstore with NO PURCHASES!

I LOVED my Little Golden Books when I was a kid. They were the main part of my "library" when I was very young. Pretty sure I have a few in a box somewhere. I just looked up inflation-adjusted dollars. That 39¢ in 1971 is $2.96 now. So it's a gain, but not quite as bad as it looks. Congratulations on getting out of there without buying! I am very impressed.

Dany, I absolutely have held on to a lot of childhood books, but I'm proud that I've been able to pare it down, little by little, to ones that I have a stronger attachment to. Diane - your point about college textbooks is a good one. I bet I have a bunch of books from my grad student days upstairs - I got rid of novels I had to study, but I am sure I have some textbooks I never really cared for in the first place that I could get rid of. If we get building our new tall bookshelves tomorrow, I will try and keep a box handy for them to give away/donate
Done: Laundry from machine to dryer 2 Load of laundry 3 Achieve laundry zero - hoorah! Meal planned and ordered groceries for the week Bought some drawer organisers for makeup, cables and stationery

I did do more PUPA and unpacked and put away more cat food cans. Cleaned regular BR toilet bowl . Cleaned downstairs toilet and sink. Processed mail. Talked with my nephew on hubby's side and my niece on my side, my DB's older DD. They both called me and it did take time away from housework, but I was pleased to hear from them. Talked with Carolyn and later with my BFF in CT. Very much time on phone today. Did some laundry, but was too tired to go down to dryer, so will rerinse it tomorrow and do that.
My best to all.

Good morning--I am dragging today, the sleep hours are going in the wrong direction, last night I think I got about 4.5 hours. It wasn't the dog this time that kept me from falling asleep initially, I just couldn't fall asleep. But, instead of her having to go out at her usual time which is around midnight--when last night I was still awake--she wanted to go out at 3, which was after I finally fell asleep. So of course, this morning she has no interest in going out yet.
Yesterday I tried to do some yard work, and after about 20 minutes I had 8 mosquito bites on my arms and had to come in. I either have to buy the stinky natural mosquito repellent, or else wait until it's cold enough that they're gone--my poor yard has had so little attention the last couple of months. And I couldn't believe it when I looked at the grass on the front lawn yesterday, it's so long, and it feels like I just mowed it.
I'm feeling a little discouraged today by everything there is to do. But the only thing to do is, do one thing at a time.

Danny, you're right, the bookstore I'm thinking of is a chain in several states, but I still can't think of the name of it... I'm so glad you found a place for the military books! I'm not a war person either, but my dad was in WWII and he died when I was young so I never got a chance to talk to him about anything he did. I know he was in England then, which may be why England during WWII is my favorite time to read about. I'm involved in the military letter/card work because although history has shown us that most of our recent wars were not entered into for admirable purposes, the young people who enlist and go to fight them are not the ones at fault, they are the brave ones. And especially at this particular point in history when we're in real danger of losing our democracy, I better understand how important a strong but constitution based military is.
You are definitely motivated if you could leave that store with no book purchases!
My only childhood book that survived to this day is an extremely tattered copy of "Surprise in the Barnyard." It has a cast of animals in it, so even when I was learning to read I already liked animals! I'm pretty sure it's not a golden book.
Hey Andrea, I'm glad you're feeling good enough to get some things done this weekend.

Good morning everypony!
my special history interest is "the old west" and I have a small collection of books that I would love to rehome. I like to buy books from local authors in small shops, but with Amazon these aren't as unique as it used to be. I also love young adult books--I guess they call them chapter books now?
DVD just got a 10,000 baby names book that he plans on recovering to look old and fancy for use when he plays Santa. To be titled something like "For Checking Twice"
We are going to a tea party at a British shop/museum for my Goddaughter's birthday. I need to head over to Michaels promptly to buy her some pens. She writes comic books.
I picked out my outfit last night--to go with my top hat! so getting dressed was easy. I might buy a flower for my hat!
have a good day, all

"For Checking Twice"
Oh, that's so cute!
I like young adult novels too scholar, the ones I like the most are those about some kind of social issue. I never heard the term chapter books though, I have heard the YA titles that adults like to read too referred to as crossover books. I did notice that probably 80% or more of the YA books being written now are fantasy or horror, my friend who's a high school writing teacher agreed with me when I asked her if it was a response to Covid.
You have a British shop/museum near you? I am envious!

My understanding: Young adult books tend to be aimed at teens, typically with somewhat more mature subject matter. Chapter books are what you have when you graduate from picture books to books with limited or no pictures (and chapters, of course). I've heard many a second- or third-grader proudly declare that they're reading chapter books now.
So Harry Potter and Redwall books are chapter books, but [fill in the blank, because I can't think of any titles] are YA books. I'd expect YA books are perhaps a subset of chapter books, but most teens wouldn't be saying "chapter" books.

Oh wow, that makes perfect sense catcats! I had never heard that term before, since I don't read children's books. (I don't consider teens children, although maybe I should?) I think I was also confusing it with chap books.
Good afternoon bree! No, the book I read was called The Raging Storm, it's very new, and #3 in the Matthew Venn series. The books are similar to her others in setting (which I LOVE) but this time it's a gay male detective. Everything she writes is good! And I love the cover photo on the hardcover version.
Okay, so I have been taking an extended reading break. I wanted to finish The Underworld, by Susan Casey. It's nonfiction about a woman who was fascinated by the deep ocean and joined in on trips taken by scientists who explored the deepest part of the ocean, until they trusted her enough to actually go down in a submersible with them. During the book, which was published this year, I kept thinking about the submersible that imploded in June, it was a big news story when it happened--and I wondered if this would have made it into her book. It did not, but after finishing the last page I looked her up and found an article she wrote for Vanity Fair shortly after it happened, and she talked about how everyone in the industry knew how bad the company was that operated that vehicle and warned her away from it. The subs she went down in were certified through extensive testing by independent organizations, and the one that was lost was never subjected to that testing because they registered it in the Bahamas and did not operate it in US waters so they could avoid the mandatory testing.
Anyway, I think the reason I couldn't fall asleep last night was because I read a chapter near the end of her book about the deep sea mining that is set to start soon--in order to get metals from the bottom of the ocean they are going to do a horrible, invasive strip mining of the ocean floor which will distrupt the entire ecosystem. Not only are there many new species of creatures at the very bottom, but the animals and microorganisms in the deepest part of the ocean are credited with absorbing so much carbon that they are probably our last defense against climate change. They are all fragile so will all be destroyed where the mining happens. There's an international organization that is supposed to be overseeing it and protecting the ocean but they seem to be getting kickbacks from the mining companies so there is nothing stopping them from destroying hundreds of thousands of miles of the ocean floor.
I read about this in another book recently too, and it's just another proof to me that we are doomed--human nature being what it is, there's no way to stop it. Money will always come out on top. I'm sure that was not conducive to peaceful sleep.
This was a really good book though, and the photos of the creatures only found at great depths are amazing. Look up a glass squid, or a barreleye fish, which has a transparent head!
The dog finally wanted to go out, and in the 5 minutes we were out there I got a couple more mosquito bites. I also inspected some dried up zinnia blooms--I'm even having trouble finding zinnia seeds because the birds and squirrels are eating them all! I think I found a few that might have seeds in them this time. Luckily zinnia seeds have a very high germination rate!
