I have to admit that sometimes I feel good saving something - and yes, I feel better tossing it out after it is good for nothing- my mother was so good at using things she saved- she made use of everything and daddy too- they perhaps came from a different generation where they knew how to make things out of things- like home made soap and soup too - candles as we did not have power my first 10 years- daddy taught me how to crochet as he made his own ropes- and mother also knew how to use the spinning wheel to make wool-from the sheep daddy raised- now every thing is done for us so even when we save things we do not even know what to do with them- and no neighbors to trade or share things with- the ladies always had gardens and if some one was hailed out then the ones who were not made sure that there was enough for the ones who got the hail- it is funny how modernized we are that we have and get so much that we do not need to save nor do we need to help each other that is why I ended up tossing so much rather than giving it away because no one else knew what to do with the stuff-because sadly every one has too much stuff- hugs Meme who is thinking out loud

Thanks, Puppybox! Very true, Meme, plus things that no one knows how to repair or equipment that goes obsolete.
Well, I had an epiphany sometime around one in the morning:
Being grateful for what you have does not mean settling for what you have.
I think all those long posts I made finally concentrated down to fourteen words for me.
My bedroom got painted over the weekend, which probably set this whole introspection off, it’s looking very very lovely in there. And there’s a new cover that actually fits the bed on the bed, which I bought yesterday after deciding to take action on that situation, too.

Meme - Thank you for sharing your memories of times past. People had to work so hard to put their dinners on the table and clothes on their backs. I know in my own family, good clothes were handed to a neighbor for their children and worn clothes were used for rags or quilted into blankets. So that saving mentality has been passed down to us, even though the need for the saving may not exist anymore.
Snailspace - I've really enjoyed reading this thread. It's especially comforting to know that others have this internal dialogue with themselves about THINGS and STUFF. I have a lot of inherited stuff which I may or may not use. Sometimes it's nice to get something of your own though, something that suits your own taste. So if you want a cutting board with lemons - get it! For me at least, it's not so much about the thing, as about having the freedom of choice - without guilt.
