Why do I have 6 cans of Campbell's Cream of Fungus soup when I do NOT consume fungi? *giggle*!! Oh how I can relate ... ok, not about the fungus soup, I love the goopy stuff, but yeah, our pantry/fridge do collect the oddest things. For you, it's cornstarch, for us, it's 5lb bags of flour. Why do we "need" 7 of them?

Dear Di, Sorry about the shelf but if you don't want to do contact paper I have also seen that spongy drawer lining stuff that's great. I think they even had it at the dollar tree or 99 cent only store. When when we setting up our home we bought shelf liner that was spongy ,cut to size and did not get stuck to the shelf. The other stuff is more of a honeycomb material. Good Luck !
Love,Laura
P.S. With all the reno's they did I can't stand that they left you with this icky shelf anyway!

 - this reminds me of Erma Bombeck who referred to her left overs in the fridge as science projects --- I have a few of those items too but now I can feed them to Miss Ashley's boy who is a friend- he will eat anything----- I must say that both he and she- the above mentioned would qualify for this board except they are still in love enough to miss the smell of their squalor-- oh and by the way- you can use cornstarch in your bath or in your laundry - cornstarch is great for dry skin that itches after a bath and will soften the water in the laundry which helps the soap do a better job-- hugs from another self -

"STOP BUYING CORNSTARCH!"---my new motto!
When I read your post I kept thinking of a radio show, Splendid Table, that used to have a segment in which listeners called in and listed everything in their kitchens and the host would dream up a dinner utilizing those ingredients.

I am glad you are enjoying the thread and I'm thrilled that it is motivating others to cull a few items from their own pantries.
PANTRY PARTNERS UNITE! ! !
Together we will valiantly battle against the hoards of Cornstarch, yukky cereal, baking chocolate, "science experiments" etc...
We shall overcome these surplus supplies! ! They WILL NOT win! !

dwa20 - I found a link on another board that might help you figure out what to do with the stuff you keep. I tried it out -- it's pretty neat. You enter all the stuff in your pantry and the program tells you what you can make with it and what else you would need to buy (it gives recipies too!). www.supercook.comComingclean

Ha! That's nothing, annieblue. For two days in a row, I have read that title as "Letter to self regarding pantyhose. . ." Nothing wrong with me. . . ! By the way, gettingsomewhere, we had a HUGE pantry moth problem a few years ago. (Hubby stored birdseed inside the house--BAD IDEA!!!!) It took us AGES to get rid of them. First of all, do the obvious: throw out anything and everything that is infested. Clean/wash off shelves and infested areas thoroughly. Wipe off the outsides of canned goods or anything else that has been stored in the same area. Wash any dishware that has been stored nearby, etc. Stop buying any dry goods until the infestation is well and truly over; you will just have to throw away anything that isn't used immediately, anyway, because it will become infested very quickly. I got around this problem a bit because I have a second refrigerator in my basement. I store things like rice, macaroni, noodles, etc. in it. I keep my extra flours, etc. in my big upright freezer that is in the basement. Again, if you don't have those options for storing dry goods, buy them only on an "as needed" basis. Now, if, for example, you purchased some rice and you have part of the package left and no place to store it away from the moths, there are a couple of other things that you can try. Your can enclose the bag/package of rice in a sealed zip-lock-style plastic bag. However, this is only a short-term solution. Those pantry moths can and WILL chew their way right through that plastic bag, given enough time! TRUST ME ON THIS! Another thing that you can try is to store the rice in glass jar that has a tightly sealing lid. You could put masking/freezer tape around the edges of the lid for good measure. Last, but certainly not least--invest in some pantry moth traps. We dragged our heels about purchasing them because of the expense, but they really were well worth the money. We were FOOLS not to buy them sooner!!! We use SpringStar Flour & Pantry Moth Traps. We bought them on-line. You probably can find them at hardware stores or Home Depot-type stores, too. You still will need to do all the purging and cleaning in addition to using the traps, of course. To this day, we keep one or two traps in our pantries, and we still catch one or two pantry moths every six months or so. Still, that is far, far better than having a full-blown infestation. (IT WAS NASTY!!!!) Good luck with conquering those pantry moths. YOU CAN DO IT!!!! (By the way, be prepared to keep wiping off your shelves on a fairly frequent basis. As the moths die off, you will find their desiccated little bodies everywhere!) Arid P.S. They may be called "pantry and flour" moths, but believe me--THEY LOVE ANYTHING CHOCOLATE--candy, cake mixes, brownie mixes, chocolate chips, baking chocolate, etc. I swear, chocolate makes them DELIRIOUS!!! I think that given the choice of a bag of rice or a package of chocolate, they'd go after the chocolate first! A.

This thread is so timely for me. I have been working up to cleaning out the pantry for several months now. I have done one shelf.
As for cornstarch - I think that is what we call cornflour - I have lost the jar that I keep it in BUT have at least 2 bags of it in different places and this would be enough cornflour to last me 10 years! I just cannot throw out food, maybe I could take it to a food bank......
