I would not be adverse to having 35 lbs of flour. I have often purchased it in 25 lb sacks. You can't have too much flour nor too much rice. But then since I cook for one, I usually eat rice daily because it is so versatile.
I go through a lot of flour because I usually bake my own bread in the bread machine. My current favorite is Jalepeno cheese bread with whole kernel corn and cornmeal in it. When you use 4 cups of flour per loaf you can go through it fast enough to warrant purchasing in bulk.
And I think a field trip to the eye doctor might be appropriate. I misread things all the time. The only reason I get this one correct is because I typed it....

When I cleaned out my cabinets I found 6 unopened bags of marshmallows. All hard-all bought for rice-crispy treats that my dad likes that I hate making and hate eating. They are only marginally food. I flung with no regret!

bumping another old thread because I am currently working on cleaning out pantry due to mice so this is very timely. I have the top two shelves cleared out, have washed /wiped over everything that was on them, removed all mouse evidence, thrown out two bin bags of stuff, cleaned shelves and then bleached them, and put stuff back on those shelves. Two more shelves and the bottom to go. But reading this has reminded me how with each pantry clean out (and it has been probably a year since the last) it gets easier to be ruthless and chuck stuff. Same with the fridge. I think it is because I remember debating about the same items last time, and (surprise surprise) here they still are, still unused, and now out of date (or further out of date). Plus obviously anything that has been opened by the mice is gone without a second thought too. Plus i need to do a grocery shop, and I absolutely don't want to do it with the pantry half done - otherwise the shopping will come home and sit in bags on floors or benches for a week (which is not good, but worse with possibility of mice). So, if bub will stay asleep for me I will sneak out and attack next shelf now.... hope this bump helps someone else too

Hey Di, Congrats to you for writing down these thoughts that are rational and reasonable. Very good idea...sometimes we need to see this criteria in print and post it like you did here 'cause the "rules" that sometimes govern us ..the ones we live by daily, are not so rational, I know this first hand.

While I'm trying to clean up, I keep looking at my pantry. It is useless to me - groceries sit in bags in the floor of the living room or kitchen, while my pantry is useless. Except as a breeding ground for miller moths, which are trying to take over my house AGAIN, THIS YEAR. While having the pantry cleaned out isn't essential - as in it's not in the line of sight - I think it would be wonderfully helpful to clean it out to the point that I could actually use it for . . . a pantry! It is fairly large; cleaned up and organized, I could put it to good use. In fact all my closets and most of my cabinets sit empty while the rooms are piled high. Thanks for bumping this thread.

Is donated food like the world's only fruitcake -- the one that gets passed around every year and never dies?
Please toss away.
messymimi HA! I actually like fruitcake, especially the kind with pineapple, macadamias, and coconut. I think I'm in a very small minority. Fruitcake has never just sat around my house. I eat it. But oddly enough, almost no one every gives it to me as a gift. I suppose I should learn to make it myself...

Fruitcake with pineapple, macadamias, and coconut ROCKS, particularly if you add maraschino cherries and pecans. It's the stuff with bits of yellow and green citron, or whatever that junk is, that's nasty. But my mother loved it, so we always got it for her for Christmas. Nobody else would touch it.

I absolutely hated my mother's fruitcake.
However, there is a rainbow bread (brand) fruitcake, about 1 pound, a square log, 2"x2"x7" that is delicious. The only place I ever saw it, tho, was in their bakery outlets.

Can I please write a letter to my self here? I need motivation too. Dear swan, why do you only use one half of your bed out of your entire two bedroom house? Why do you minimize your life to just that one corner? Are you nuts? It's like you are afraid of the rest of the house. Move beyond your comfort zone girl! What about that outdoor space you are neglecting? Anybody would love to have that. You are being penned in by your stuff, pretty soon you are going to lose that piece of bed that you cling to. And if you spend so much time in bed, why not put some sheets on the darn thing? Would it kill you to clear off the other half and make room for the dog? By the way, that crock pot full of beans has been sitting on the counter for a month now, it's not solving its own problem of its very existence. thank you I somehow feel better. Good job on your own cleaning up and helping us laugh WITH ourselves.

Dear Self, GET OFF YOUR KEESTER and get your OWN closet cleaned out!!! It's ridiculous that there is a pile of shoes right inside the door blocking your walk to get to your clothes. You have the coordination of a three toed sloth on crack at the best of times; having those shoes there is just asking for a head first fall into a closet where you might not be found for days....Besides there is no AC in the closet... not only will you kill yourself you will stink up the house with rapid decay....
How much trouble can it be to clean out ONE closet??? Those clothes you are saving for "Look Your Worst Day" are not getting any more attractive through aging. If you can clean out other people's closets you CAN clear out your own. GET WITH THE PROGRAM!!! Besides, YOUR grandson needs a place to put his clothes , you could stop being selfish and share some room with him.
***********************************************************
I am glad this got bumped.... Self needed ANOTHER stern talking to. She is so very stubborn and not really biddable nor acquiescent. She really could be a lot nicer.... I sometimes wonder about her.... Sigh....
*********************
BTW 3 years and one move later, I STILL have some of the individual condiment cups... the kids are now using them up mixing paint in them. And I gave the communion cups to a church. And as for those ganky, manky shelves... maintenance finally did come and they couldn't figure out what to do about the condition of the shelves either so they covered them with vinyl flooring and that held up beautifully and was easy to wipe out and keep clean. I did end up having to paint the inside of the pantry myself... But I kept it clean and manageable until I moved away from that H3** HOLE.

I am so glad this thread got bumped! It's a timeless topic, and Di you are so FUNNY! For anybody fighting the pantry moths still - I think those things and cockroaches will outlive everything else! - I also endorsed the method of putting pasta, rice, and flour in the fridge or freezer if you have room. We eat cereal fast enough that it doesn't have time to get infested. Also, if you have a lot of the little annoying things, you just have to empty the pantry and wash out down and be sure to get up at the corners of the ceiling too. Again, Di, just love your letters to self! I have boo idea why she just won't read those letters and immediately carry out all your good suggestions!

Believe me, toss that cornstarch. I just bought a new box at the Asian Grocery that love to go to..and my other box that was empty.. I swear it lasted at least 10 years and I do a lot of stirfry. I bet it cost a dollar! The space it takes, not worth it in shelf dollars is how I am trying to look at it.
As I said in another post, I was a food rep for 3 years. I recently threw up a couple hundred dollars worth of Starbucks Tassimo coffee/expresso cappunchino packages.. after having them for over a year, that I got for free. I did not like the taste, it gave me heartburn and anyone who would have used them would need a expensive machine. It was hard to to that.. but I did and am proud of myself. They were taking up space. Of course, that made room for the 18lb bag of bread flour from Sams, and the 25 lb bag of brown rice I got at the Asian grocery. Try freezing flour and then putting it in containers.. I learned that a long time ago, the bugs are latent in the flour and hatch. Freezing fixes that and then you should be able to store in containers outside the freezer. I bought the rice in Nov, it is half gone and in big Tupperware. I have convinced the BF that brown rice is the way to go!
I also have struggled with food hoarding. I have no idea why.. I grew up in an household that was upper middle class with no hunger issues. I have spent a lifetime working and volunteering at food pantries and working with people that do, and that may be some of it. Some of it was getting divorced after a long term marriage, but I did also when married, and we had a high income. It is the girl scout in me, I want to be prepared. More is better in my world, and after all the flour and rice are cheaper that way..!
The souffle cups as we call them in the business.. I keep finding bags of them in the garage. Those are going out today. They come in 1000 cups per bag! I only need a few.. another thing I could buy if I really really needed paint cups for my business. Amnesty the way to go! I also have to let some other things go today. TG I unplugged the big freezer in my basement when I was separated, I could not justify the electric costs and the auto defrost broke so I had it fail or have to put it all in coolers, defrost it and then worry about it not working.. I should have that hauled out. I said if I need a new one, I could buy at Sams a smaller single woman one, that was under 200.00. With my issues, not going to do that. If it doesn't fit in the top freezer of my fridge, I do not need it.
I am going to work at getting rid of some more food and kitchen items. For a week I have a George Foreman Grill I bought thrift and somehow ruined the non stick finish. I have something similar.. but for a week it has sat next to my kitchen garbage with the should I or should I not throw it. Why because I like it.. but if I can find it, I have something similar in the garage. Out it goes.. this has helped me. All of us have to do the best we can.
