I have done something which had never seemed possible: we have been able to convert a whole room in the finished basement into a craft room for ME. It is not finished yet, but I have already done a huge something. I would like to share this story.
When we moved into this house EXACTLY 29 years ago, approximately one-half of the huge full basement (dry, high) was 'finished'. One room became the TV room: DH's den. He keeps his car books & trophies here, Alfa Romeo souvenirs etc. I use this room for fitness now, too.
The other room was the designated junque repository for 25 of the last 29 years: *music papers *books *dust *all stash-and-dash items *gathering spot for charity give-away bags *suitcases *dust *typewriter for doing year-end employee tax forms (T4's) *books *clutter of every kind *dust *fold up tables used maybe once every year? *ironing supplies *dust *books *xmas supplies *car magazines *dust *unwanted table cloths & matching napkins (don't fit new table)
In 2005, when I joined FlyLady and then Squalor Survivors, I got rid of about 700 books. I paid my brother $200 to get rid of them. There was 25 years of dust here: nothing ever dusted. I have subsequently kept on getting rid of books. And dusting. I also trashed (recycling) all the photocopies of music: it took me three whole garbage cycles (6+ weeks) to do this.
A few years ago: I put the typewriter and stand for give away free on Craig's List: it went in a few hours. I refuse ever again in my life to type another T4 or tax thing. EVER.
Other things I did since the laundry area was finished (Dec'08):
*moved more camping stuff into the furnace room *re-boxed and moved xmas stuff into furnace room *insisted that our neighbour kids TAKE the old table and cloths which they wanted: NOW *got rid of 75 books to Deacon at church for seminary use etc *got rid of HUGE numbers of books (200?) to library, used book stores, silent auction.
Richard (Mr Hunk) came over the last two weeks to re-do the floor. The lino was ripped in multiple places, only one of which was visible. The rest were under the furniture. Today, I came home FULL of anxiety from a crazy work day. Richard & helper had moved back just a bit of the 'library room' furniture. I told them, "DO NOT MOVE ANYTHING ELSE YET".
Together, they helped me decide on what to do. *all luggage bagged in clear large bags: to be store in furnace room *the party wine glasses which are ALWAYS re-washed before use: store in furnace room *the sleeping bags (in good rubbermaide mega-storage box) fit in the spot formerly filled by the party wine glasses (these have been loaned to various friends over the years)
I had them move two METAL file cabinets to the former table-luggage wall. We put ONE large piece of plywood on top: covered with tablecoth. I already had a chair there. This is now a huge craft desk.
I moved most of the craft supplies from the office to the NEW CRAFT ROOM. Plus a small adorable children's rocker (needlepoint seat made by my grannie for me: maybe 1950?). Plus a good extra music stand (useful). PLUS various scrapbooking boxes and baskets and bags of craft things, gift wrapping stuff. Etc.
I will try to take pix and post them.
HURRAH from Script I had been procrastinating with finishing some photo card craft project: I need a LOT OF SPACE to do this. I have already arranged some on the NEW CRAFT DESK: Richard was impressed: "awesome" he said.
Things still to do: *get floor lamp or something *move all gift wrapping supplies from office to craft room (2 drawers of file cabinet) *move all tax material in craft room file cabinet to office (easy switcheroo)
My DH has limited computer skills, but he recently learned how to Google, and watch You Tube. We will no longer be tripping over each other in the office: which already looks hugely better.
