My apartment is 90% painted! My friend AFW couldn't finish the painting this week like we wanted, but he'll come back next week to do the bedroom and bathroom. In the meantime the entrance, living room, dining room, kitchen and large basement room are all done. The icky terra-cotta wall in the kitchen is gone, as are the dingy white walls, replaced with a happy yellow and bright white trim. I am extremely happy about having my own colours in here, finally, after over ten months of waiting and living with terra cotta, hospital green, and dirty white and dirty pale blue. Blick! That being said, it looks like a bomb went off in here now. I had to shift stuff from room to room while AFW worked, and now it looks like my kitchen vomited into the living room. I've been slowly putting things back, but it's sort of slow going. I've been working a lot and don't have that much energy when I get home. I also have piles of books EVERYWHERE. There is no reason for this, other than that I simply haven't got around to putting them in some kind of order and putting them away. I have more than enough bookshelves for them. *sigh* The bedroom is a disaster, filled with random clutter that I moved while AFW was painting. I need to do several loads of laundry, not to mention find storage for a lot of this stuff (much of it is my craft supplies). More money to spend. Not much, but it does add up eventually. Did I mention that I have a seemingly random infestation of fruit flies? I hate fruit flies. Time to break out the vinegar, I guess. Stupid flies. I don't even know where they came from. Okay. Off I go to put away some more stuff in the kitchen! Tally-ho! ~Mouse

Hi Mouse! Congratulations on your newly renovated digs! I,too am a lover of books. My old bookshelf was homemade and unruly and I finally gave up on setting it up for the millionth time. My books are in boxes in the storage unit. If your bookshelves are completely empty, maybe shove them up there in no particular order to free up some floor space. My problem is all the storage areas are just too full. My old space had one huge hall closet with linen shelves and I am lost without my closet! Today my goal is to find the livingroom floor! Are you a student? I wonder what kind of books you like to read. Enjoy your new colours! Fruit flies!! I think they hitchhike in on the bananas! Cheers! Serendipity AKA Bookworm

hi mouse; congrats on getting your own colors in your place finally! it must feel so good and look wonderful.
fruit flies: i put food scraps in freezer in a little bag until i take trash out to dumpster. this gets them gone if i get slack on the dishes, and they die off pretty quickly. i'd like to know your vinegar tip too.
hope you post pics when you get done putting things back together.

Thanks for you kind words. I am very happy about the new paint. It makes everything look so much happier! Right now most of the books are shoved onto the bookshelves in untidy piles, but I really want to get them properly organized and nice-looking. This is my perfectionism rearing its ugly head: why bother putting the books away if I can't do it "right?" Still, I will be tackling that project ASAP. My storage areas are doing okay. I don't hoard that many things (mostly books and office supplies ), and my bathroom not only has room for my washing machine, it also has two cupboards that I'm using for linens. I don't have *quite* enough room for them all, but the rest are on top of the cupboards in reasonably tidy piles. Good luck finding your living room floor! I remember the first time I found mine, how excited I was. Almost as excited as when I was able to sleep in a clutter-free, fully-made bed for the first time in months! As for what kind of books I like, it's all a bit random. I'm not a student anymore, though I used to be (I studied English lit., History, German and Italian at university). I mostly read fiction, and genre fiction at that. Fantasy, science fiction, mystery novels. I'm a huge fan of Austen, and I love reading poetry. I haven't kept up with mainstream fiction lately, although I used to, and I keep wondering if I should get back to it. I stopped reading it because so much mainstream fiction seems to be navel-gazing these days, and I long for the time when novels used to deal with the big questions of life rather than the existential qualms of individual characters with seemingly no major problems in their lives that they haven't created themselves. Ahem. Sorry, got a little ranty there, yet again. I seem to be doing that a lot here lately. Stupid fruitflies. I don't even have bananas, but I bet you're right. They materialize out of nowhere! ~Mouse

oh mouse- I remember those days but in the end it will all be glorious for you- oh and Meme and books- why could I not have just collected stamps- But Meme! You can't read stamps! My father collects books *and* stamps. Let me tell you, while the books take up more room, the stamps can also get out of hand if you let them. I am looking forward to it all being glorious. I've already done a good bit of tidying, and it already looks much better! ~Mouse

As soon as I locate my camera and charge it, I will be taking pictures of the put-together place. It already looks pretty fantastic, and having my own colours in here has made a world of difference already! Have I mentioned how much I hate fruit flies? Anyway, if you put out a flat-ish dish with vinegar in it, apparently they will fly into it and drown, or so I've heard. Usually I just use flypaper, but I don't have any right now. *sigh* ~Mouse

Dear Mouse, Hi there! I used to do my books by size ,maybe start there rather than subject. today i got really MAD at my floor!! so i have gotten alot done. we have ended up with a hamster and somehow shavings are everywhere. i took out one full large bag of trash and a bag of paper recycling. i am also unearthing the kitchen table!i am fed up! it is so irritating to never be able to find anything, to step on stuff all the time, and my son literally just tosses empty jiuce boxes, wrappers, etc on the floor. if i can get back got up i can say, this goes here and that goes there.
i still have my biology texts, i love them but they are boxed up. i have started collecting a few hardcover childrens' books. i really want my son to develop my love of books but i grew up without much tv and to me books were such an adventure. i am disappointed that he doesn,t show more interest but to him it is work. My favourite right now is Here-Be- Monsters! by Alan Snow. There are so many great childrens' fantasy books. I am always waiting to read them with him ,but i think I am going to start reading them myself.
I was inspired when i was in grade seven to fill up a summer reading card. Maybe I should do that again! I find it a little bit hard to concentrate to read but i think that will improve as i read more. i think a good way to find good current fiction could be looking for prize winners and nominees. One that is canadian is the Giller prize. Some of this year's books sound really interesting. You are multi -lingual and well-read!
Bye for now. thanks for your encouragement Mouse.! I am now going to tackle underneath the kitchen table. I have vacuumed a few small areas . I am trying to pick up a small area and then vacuum it and keep up momentum by seeing small cllean areas.

Your yellow paint sounds so cheerful and pretty. I'm trying to get geared up to paint my office and am thinking yellow. I spent all this weekend working on clearing it out and am finally almost done.
Today I was sitting in there looking around and I suddenly noticed how dingy the paint was.... something I never even thought about when it was filled with junk. A step in the right direction! :-)

Mouse that line above two steps forward one step back was the title of a book I took from my pastor once....he had it on his shelf..or was it three steps forward one step back? oh I forget.....
but the colors sound nice....my kitchen is dreary blue cabinets and I would love to paint them but I rent.....so I am not in mood to do it here....bedroom is blue which is okay because they put up a boarder at top but the rest of my house is chalk white....all rooms....and I have desire for new carpets in living room and small hallway...they nasty old things that were from the sixties I think....I have been here ten years now and they said I could get new carpets if the landlord could come inspect for other damages first....you know what I never invited him to come look around....it has been stage one squalor and I just didn't feel he needed to look at that as he may say get outta here.....
anyway I like fresh paint smells....
