on local news a few days ago a family was denied housing in low rentals due to squalor references and will be homeless as they were evicted from 2 previous rentals due non payment of rent and squalor - the housing units are condos and that is why they cannot move in as fear of bugs etc- moving in and entering other units- and also the housing authorities said it would not be fair for the other renters to have them living in the block of condos- the housing authorities are willing to work with them if they do not move the squalor in - in other words any cloth furniture and or clothes but they will help them get these new supplies free. they will not be free but good donated furniture that is clean and safe- and then all other property must be cleaned and pass inspection before it can be moved in--and they cannot own pets anymore becasue the SPCA had to cease the animals they had due to health issues - also the family would be on probation and subject to health inspections every two months. if they are not willing to do this and decide to go homeless the SS will remove the children to foster care until they have a clean safe home to move the kids into- the mental health is willing to work with them also to help them get on their feet- they( the family) went to the news station hoping to get help but once the story broke- no one has come forward to rent to them- the previous land lords did try to work with them but the man says that they have a right to live as they see fit- sadly the squalor did a lot of damage to the rentals = and pictures were shown of the squalor left behind and the family did not deny anything. I do think that if they take the offer they will be able to get help to move away from squalor, both physically and emotionally- they did not appear to be hoarders as they only had a small moving van and now of course- the moving company wants the van returned- the kids ( whose faces were blanked out as well as parent's faces) looked so hopeless the way their bodies slumped as the mom and dad continue to state that squalor is a right .- I do agree about us having rights and it being ok for two adults but the kids do not get to choose- and of course- I agree that landlords have the right to refuse when they have a poor reference. I am not sure if the authorities would have made the offers if the news station was not looked into the situation- I cannot find any news or updates on the internet- I hope that they take the help for the kids and do not just move off to another city- I am assuming that there is more to the story than the man was willing to admit too and because of the privacy laws the station can only say so much. I am sort of hoping that folks will step forward and give them some food and clothes and house hold needs- I cry for the kids as they have lost their treasures and their pets and their home and friends in the area where they lived and now maybe their parents. I cannot say if there was any addictions involved as that was not reported- I do think the family thought that the news story would go in their favor-
the story made me sad and a bit discouraged - not re the squalor but re the kids and also the parents because I do not believe that the adults could want to live that way and let the kids go-

Well, to be perfectly blunt and honest... i DONT feel sorry for the parents. Help HAS been offered the parents (adults) are simply not wanting to comply.
I DO however, feel very sorry for the kids and I hope CPS steps in and takes the kids out of the harmful path their parents are choosing.

Do you happen to have a link for the story? I would be interested in reading the full thing. I agree too, they should be willing to do what they are asked. It is annoying, especially the inspections, but if it were me, and I had the kids, I would be kind of glad, cause it would force me to keep the squalor under control. I would not have the b**ls to go to the news and complain about it!

no link yet- it may get to the web later- most of our local news does not go on unless someone like me tells the story= the hard thing is that they left so much of the squalor behind that they would have had an easy start over- my impression was that to them- it was not squalor- and when they did leave and return the key they left a cat behind but when confronted- they said they were going back for the cat but how could they with no key? the cat is classed as adoptable unless she gets better in a foster home. I called a friend and she heard but said her info might no be true or complete- that the kids were returned through the court to family members in another province- possibly the grand parents-and the man had a warrant out so now he is in jail- the mother may have gone with the kids- they may have been scammers and thought the community would help out but any things that would be given would go into a trust to be used for the kids and housing- there is a place where stuff can be dropped off to share with needy- that way if there is clothes that do not fit or double appliances they can be shared in the community- there are resources they can go too unless they have done this before- however the kids will never be turned down no matter how many times or places the parents scam- it is an rule set in place to protect the kids from doing with out- when I worked at the homeless shelter we had to mark the cans and milk as a lot of parents would try to return the food - I always felt bad putting a big black X on the milk for everyone as a lot were honest folks who needed help but we did not know who- we even had remove the diapers from the original packs as one mother would was returning them for money- however i would say that 75 percent of the folks we helped were honest,

Hi papaswife- I'm in Canada too. What city/town did this happen in? I'd like to look for the story as well.
