Very good article, even for non-hoarders. I think we all hold onto SOME stuff that we shouldn't.

I really liked the tip that suggests you hold up an item and ask yourself "Would I buy this if it were for sale today? If so, how much would I pay for it?"

Thanks for posting that nice link and a very good site RealSimple. Liked the last one about the "fuchsia dress with taffeta bows" .
I got rid of a lot of the "oldie clothes" a few years ago. However, I guess I'll always keep my pretty, decades old, rayon, made in India , tan/ black/ brown and white"hippie" blouse. That one's a keeper that I really like.

I read this post earlier today and thought about the article when pulling books later. The "Know Thyself" point really stood out to me. I was holding a book called *Weekend Afghans* and thought, "Well, I might want to make one of these," then suddenly stopped and remembered the article.
I'm probably never going to decide to devote my weekend to making an afghan and if I really decide to I can go to the library and check out a book on it. Into the Goodwill box it went.
Thanks!!
Now just 300 more to go.....

Yeah that one's a keeper for me, I want to adopt that as my clearing out mantra. And if I would pay less than a fiver I shall trust that should I ever need such a thing agian, I will be fortunate enough to have a fiver in my wallet.

hello, 12 years ago I was having yard sales to earn money for a downpayment for our first home. ... Every item I picked up, I asked myself... "Do I want this or do I want a house?" It put it in perspective for me. I did it again last year with trying to find some vacation money for the family and having yard sales. I know sales aren't for everyone and I'm not recommending that, I was just connecting with the would I buy it again comment! I got rid of a lot of stuff!

paperpiler, This is a really fun & helpful article! Like others, I loved the "Would I buy it again & how much would I pay for it?" idea.
AND the observation that, were Grandma still alive, she would definitely have replaced the old knives & cookie sheets!
