Don't get me wrong - I love our Mama Earth, I recycle, I grocery shop with reusable bags, I take public transportation, I use green products, I reuse, I wear stuff OUT before I ditch it... HELLO - I'm a hoarder! You probably guessed that I save and reuse everything ... but I am being buried in stuff not even a hoarder could want - because no one is allowed to throw anything out anymore!!! I started at severe Level 3 - had to clean up the cat poo with a shovel. Sink pudding. etc. I got most of the house to an "ugly 1" (i.e. still cluttered but nothing is being blocked, basic services work, etc. I'm not ready to entertain, but I'm not too embarrassed to have tradespeople in if something needs fixing.) But the back bedrooms are stalled at level 2 because I've had to make them the repository for things I need to make special arrangements to get rid of (like a huge busted tv). Anyway, I saved up and decided to reward my progress with new more efficient kitchen appliances. A dishwasher! A smooth cooktop for easy cleaning - and less time cleaning kitchen means I can focus efforts elsewhere There's a re-use place 60 miles from here that hauls your appliances away for $100 a load, refurbishes them and sells them. So I went ahead and found a great deal from an out of town warehouse place and expect to hear from the freight shipper the week of July 7. I was so happy! Except now I can't get rid of the old ones because the re-use place now has a policy that they don't take appliances over 15 years old. We aren't allowed to put things out for free, or have yard sales here, so I figured I would turn them over for safe disposal by the solid waste district... hire a truck and get rid of the rest of the stuff filling the bedroom, at the same time - but wait! Our Solid Waste District has a "no landfill" policy for appliances. They suggest I contact.. (wait for it).... the place that rejected them! It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. I looked into 1-800-GOT-JUNK and while they apparently service other parts of my state, they don't come to my town. I've contacted ServiceMaster hoping they can find pros in my area to deal with it... but no one has responded with a quote. Time is a ticking. Oh lordy... what am I going to do??? They sure can't go in the back bedroom with the rest of the crap I'm not allowed to throw out. And they wonder why illegal dumping is such a big problem. Ya think???

Have you tried a scrapyard? Or maybe Freecycle? There's usually a few people on any given Freecycle group that take old appliances to the scrapyard and sells them.

I agree wuth dragonchilde. Here, we are allowed to put that stuff on the curb, but it often doesn't last long enough for he city's people to come get it because the scrap metal pickers get it first. Try freecycle and craigslist, someone is bound to come after them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am trying craigslist and freecycle... but don't have much hope. Much of the activity is centered around the urban area of the state - which I am not in.
There was a scrapyard in the area but it closed. Now I'm not aware of any others in this county so I'm hoping current scrap metal prices will give someone enough incentive to drive 2-3 hrs.

if you can, break it down with a hammer or whatever stuff it in a white or black trash bag and set it out with regular trash. make sure the bag is double up and non see through and dont pack it too full to be suspicious. the trucks that come around and collect are likely not going to dig through your trash. our trash bins are the kind the truck takes and flips over the back of the truck.. the trash guys dont even touch the trash anymore.

You don't have to use a national chain like 800-got-chunk. You could find a local hauler in you area to take the stuff to the dump. Good 'ol craigslist will do the trick every time.
Oh yeah, I once posted a free "broken TV" and it was gone within hours. You'd be surprised what people will take off your hands for you.

I did get some bites on Craigslist! Unfortunately, the first person who was going to come didn't fully understand what was involved and had to back out. But it looks like I have someone else lined up to come later this week - crossing my fingers! I'm a little nervous as I didn't get a response to my last e-mail and they don't have directions yet. (Oh please don't back out!!!)

Call back the company that you ordered the new appliances from. Ask if they haul away the old appliance when they deliver and install the new one. I think that is standard practice!
I am certain that when we purchased our new stove they took away the old hideous olive green monster that was a rusty pit! Best of luck to you!

Crazycatlady - I purchased these from out of state and they are coming freight, so no haul away/install service. I know that sounds nuts but I timed my purchase to take advantage of multiple overlapping sales/promotions so I got an insane deal plus free freight, an upgrade to inside delivery and 18 mos 0% financing. As long as they bring them inside, I don't care about install. I know an excellent (and very reasonable!) plumber and I'd be more comfortable if he installed the dishwasher. The range is electric so no need to play with gas lines. I can handle plugging it in.

Well...are there any places near you that buy scrap metal? They might take appliances that have lots of metal...it IS a huge problem if you can't get anyone to take away the large junk.

Whew! The appliances are gone!!! They didn't flake out although they did arrive hours later than scheduled. Understandable since they came from hours away and hit road construction. I will still have to find someone for the tv etc later ...but the main crisis is averted. Woo hoo! Of course what we found behind them was disgusting. Lots of steam and scraping and BAM! and now I'm out of clean mop heads so the final mop and the gel with bleach on the stubborn stains will have to wait. What I want to know is what crazy person chose white and cream textured vinyl flooring? Like *that* was gonna be easy to maintain over the years.
