Tonight I made popcorn in my microwave oven (which I've done a zillion times before). It said to pop for 4 minutes. I know my microwave is high wattage, so I set it for 3.30 so it wouldn't burn.
After about 3 minutes, my daughter smelled smoke. I opened the microwave, and smoke poured out.
It apparently was an old bag (exp. 12-07), and it had a slight oily feel to the bag when I had put it in the microwave.
Problem: It has left a yellowish tint on the walls of the microwave. Not burned at all, no marks. Just a yellowish tint from the oil/smoke combo, I guess.
Has this happened to anyone previously, so I could have a proven method for trying to bring that yellowish surface tint off the walls so it looks white again?
Thanks!

This happened to me at my sister's apartment - her microwave is different than mine and I accidentally set it for 30 minutes instead of three. Using a Magic Eraser-type sponge took the yellow film off without too much trouble, but the burnt popcorn smell lasted for a while even after the inside looked clean.

If it's just a film, try the lemon trick from the heloise thread... put a lemon wedge in a bowl of water, microwave for two minutes, repeat as needed, until whatever it is comes off with a sponge. Worked wonders on the crusty stuff in my microwave, might take the gunk off of yours.

Thank you. I have both on hand, so we'll try and see if either works.

Thanks to you both for your suggestions. I had the same thing happen to a new microwave and was not able to figure out how to remove the yellow. It really bothered me. I gave the microwave to my son, whose counter does not face into the kitchen. Now I'll be able to get it off for him.

I tried both, and neither worked. There's still this yellowness...not a film or grime...but yellowness.
I did a search online and people are swearing by 100% pure acetone. I'm scared of it...so I'm going to just put a little dab on a cotton ball tonight to moisten it and take a swipe at about an inch by inch space. Then I'm going to wash it off really well with soap and water. Then I"m going to take a look at it in the morning light and see if it made any difference. No sense in cleaning the whole oven with this stuff and scaring myself if it doesn't work. But people are swearing by it.

My husband did that once...and I told him that he COULD have used the popcorn button! I think ours is still yellow six years after that incident. Doesn't seem to hurt anything. Hubby took it apart and eventually got the smell out.
