You know I don't think there is really an organized way to remove carpet. I'm sure it is going to look great once you get this project done. If the floor is stained beyond repair, I have seen the paint that you put on decks that allows the grain to show through, so you might get something like that and then put a polyurethane finish over it make it shine.
I also saw where they have out a really dark finish to put on hardwood floors also, that should cover up anything. If you run into this problem go to the Lowes or Home Depot in your area and tell the person working in flooring the problem you are having and they usually have a product that will work to fix or cover the problem.

OMIGOD! ! I was just logging on to post that I finally ripped out the carpet in the second living area! I'd ripped out the carpet in most of the house a couple years ago, but I don't use that living room much, so it was easy to procrastinate. I planned to do it in 15 minute chunks this weekend, but once I got going, I didn't stop until it was DONE! It was so old and ratty that the carpet pad had disintegrated into dust. I also found some potty places that my kitties must have been using. I hope once the floors are all hard, they will not be as tempted. I only have one room left to pull it out of.... the storage room. I an only half done decluttering that room, though, so I doubt I will be ready to work on that carpet this weekend... maybe next. This reminds me (in a non-sexual way ) of the scene from Armageddon where the couple is in a field and the guy is playing with animal crackers on her belly, and they wonder if somewhere in the world at that same moment, anyone else is doing the exact same thing. HAHAHAHA

I just logged on because my carpeting needs so badly to be ripped out. I think since I'm new here I'll see how others are progressing. I've had too many surprises for the dh when he comes home, and he doesn't appreciate them the way I do. I'm glad to be reminded about all the tacks and staples... I don't think he'd love that part and want to dive right in and help me...

I've had too many surprises for the dh when he comes home, and he doesn't appreciate them the way I do. I'm glad to be reminded about all the tacks and staples... I don't think he'd love that part and want to dive right in and help me... This room wasn't so bad because it used to be the garage, so the floor is concrete. In the rest of the house, there were dozens and dozens of staples per room. I had to pull out so many with needle nose pliers that I had blisters and callouses. Plus, it was twice as hard since they had rusted, so it often took 2 or three tries to get one staple out. All that being said, having that disgusting carpet out of there was worth all the effort. Even though the floor beneath isn't in the greatest shape, it is 10 times better than what the carpet was. To make it less annoying, I just agreed (with myself) to pull out at least ten staples at a time. That could be only 10 in a day, or ten 3 times a day, or whatever. It was just much easier than looking at the task as a whole.
