I am soooo glad I found this site. I am trying to change and get out of this mess and I can tell this is going to be so helpful and I'm not alone. No one around me can really understand and I feel very alone with it, but this helps me feel like there's someone out there that understands and can help me change. When I see the pictures posted I know someone has dealt with the same thing. I wish I had a friend here that could be right here with me but atleast online there is some support. I am wondering if anyone knows who you can call to come help when the whole house is overwhelming. The shows on tv like "Clean House" and "Clean Sweep" have people that come in when its so overwhelming. I need someone similar to that. Housecleaning services can't do it. I wonder who can be called that can see the disaster, understand, and help me tackle it when its all so overwhelming? thanks for any advice you have....

Hi txkyles, You sure found the right place! I know there are services that specialize in houses like ours, but I don't know how to access. But I bet someone on this board does! In the meantime, I know it can seem overwhelming. But little by little it can be conquered. And even backsliding can be conquered (at least I hope! ) I really like posting on the Working in Threes board on Listzilla. It really works for me when I can't figure out what to do and I'm overwhelmed. I can set the tiniest goals, like: pick up 3 pieces of paper, put them in the trash, drink a glass of water. And then I get cheers and encouragement for accomplishing! And some days, those are actually big goals because of where I'm at. And the people on this board get that. Anyway, I'm rambling now - so that's my cue to stop and say: glad you're here, looking forward to getting to know you better notc

Welcome, Txkyles! You actually can call around to several cleaning services, and let them know that your place is really bad, and see if they will clean it. Basically, you are hiring someone for a service, and if you want them to clean around piles until you can sort them, they can do that!
There are also disaster cleaning services that are trained to clean up after crime scenes or floods, and they might be better in some cases.
Keep reading here at SooS. You will find the tools to begin to change how you deal with your home, so that you can learn new skills to either clean up, or keep it clean after someone else cleans up!

thanks for the notes back....i'd say i'm in atleast third degree squalor. Probably right at about third degree. I am going to take pictures as "before" scenes to post. i am so overwhelmed i almost want to just go back to sleep and avoid it. I can't get to my bed and its covered so i sleep on the couch or the end that is not covered in junk. I think i will try doing three things and see if i can just pick any three and start somewhere. Deciding where to even start is difficult. Thanks for the support and understanding.....

Welcome txkyles! Sometimes I just sit down on my bed, or the couch, or a diningroom chair, and start sorting and tossing what I can reach from there. It's an easy way to start. Anyway, we are glad you are joining us.

Welcome!!!
I just recommended the book Buried in Treasures to another newbie. I think it is very helpful, and encourage you to check it out.
There are professional organizers who work with clutterers and hoarders. I am blanking on his name, but one person has been on Oprah several times, and has some compassion and understanding for people who are in this state. I think his last book was Does This Clutter Make My *** Look Big? or something like that. I have not read that book, but have seen programs on Oprah where he's worked with hoarders and clutterers. (You can view her old programs on her website.) If you can afford it, I suggest contacting a professional association of organizers to find out who has experience in helping people reclaim their homes and their lives in your area. A cleaning service can do a good job on getting the place looking better, but you might backslide again if you don't work on some of the core reasons why you got there in the first place. Just my opinion.
There are a lot of Texans who are on this board, so you'll be in good company! Hope to see you around.

Welcome to SOS. "I feel very alone with it, but this helps me feel like there's someone out there that understands..." The one thing you are not, is alone in this. This happens to people everywhere, in all parts of the world. Sometimes, I think we outnumber the Cleanies, but I can't prove it! The funny thing is, I now have a couple of hours work each week, AS A CLEANER. It is for an agency providing services to people with disabilities or who are aged and infrrm, to help prevent institutionalisation. So I can do it, I just have a problem organising my own home and keeping it clean.
