westsidestory: wow, lots of good info there. Isn't it amazing what they continue to discover about the brain and behavior?
Victoriaj: I'm a new member here, too. Although I seem to be managing to maintain my surroundings at an extremely messy but not out-of-control level right now, I have been where you are more than once in my life (and not so long ago). I must say, (speaking strictly for myself) I would hesitate to take on a pet, even if I managed to get my environment up to snuff through a Herculean short-term effort. I would feel a need to prove to myself that I could keep the mess down to a dull roar on a long-term basis.
In the past, I have kept pets successfully (at various times, a cat, birds, mice, and snakes), but only when I was living with either a spouse or a roommate. I really felt pressure not to let things slide too far for their sakes. On my own, I need to feel a bit more in control of myself before I'll try again. But that's just me...if you're really craving a little furry companion, you owe it to yourself to try!
I hope your mother is feeling better soon. Please let us know how Project Pussycat progresses!

Welcome. Funny enough, it was a UK programme, How Clean is Your House, that got me going. I would watch an episode on Sunday morning and then get up and clean for the rest of the day. Then the ABC (Australian version of the BBC) stopped showing it and I got desperate, did a google and found this group. This group is the major reason for my progress. ETE (erasing the evidence) was the best thing I learned, i. e. looking back into the room and removing all "Evidence of My Glorious Presence", you know, coffee cup, papers, crisp packets, clothes, dirty plate, shoes kicked off under the sofa!
