My spare bedroom is starting to slide out of control again. This weekend, I cleaned up the pet cage in there, and the area around it, but that's it. In spite of the bed being made up with my favorite comforter, the room is just ... ugly. Mismatched furniture, too MUCH furniture, piles of clutter on the desk, etc. Due to other expenses that came up this weekend, I have no budget left to do anything about the room, with the exception of the clutter. This is making me not want to work on the room at all. Why bother decluttering if it's still going to be ugly in there? I know in my head that even if I had an unlimited budget on that room, I'd still have to declutter it first, but logic has gone out the window today for some reason.

I hear you. I am currently battling a major lack of motivation to clean my Cat Genie. Not only am I miffed that it has clogged after only a month of usage, I now have a basin full of cat-poop-coloured waste water and pellets to deal with. Good luck! ~Mouse

Thanks guys. I'm tackling the room in tiny bites, in the Working in Threes thread. So far I've thrown out a couple of dozen pieces of trash, made neat stacks of what was left, and am going through those stacks, about half a dozen items at a time. I work on a few things in that room, then go do something else that's not as annoying, and then go back and do a few more things. This is working for me, at least for right now. I've figured out how this room gets out of control so quickly. The primary problem is that there is a desk right inside the door of this room, and this is the dumping ground for all clutter. This is my secret for keeping most of the rest of the house at a level 0: All of the clutter in the house goes on the desk in the spare room. The way I see it, the room is ugly anyway, so it doesn't matter. So I need to get this room looking better so that I don't want to wreck it with piles of mail and such. Maybe then I will be more inclined to do something with the clutter as it comes into the house. Or maybe I'll find another place to dump it. *sigh*

what about removing and simplifying furniture, one bed, one dresser, one nightstand by the bed, and one desk with a chair. Furnish with a FEW items such as a lamp on the night stand and a mirror over the dresser? everything else gets given to charity or goes to yardsale.
every time you have a piece of clutter, either find a home for it, or resolve to throw it away or give it away. if you cant find a home or a place for it to belong, within 1 minute or 2 minutes, it goes into the give away pile.. know what i mean? for papers and reciepts, i suggest you invest in a small plastic bin, everything gets put in the bin (try to get one with file folders that hook to the sides of it, then when it gets full, take it out and go through it and decide which reciepts/papers are important to keep (bills and such) and which are non important,\ - last weeks grocery list/reciept.

A big on throwing out that trash and going through the stacks!! You're doing great!!! Yesss...this is my bane too! Hidden squalor. This is how I deal with stuff too. Your idea of taking little bites is good, leave for awhile and come back to it. I need to do this with a shelf in my laundry room but I get that stupid "gotta do it all" thing going in my head and well, you know the rest. I hope everything goes well for you
