I have tons of laundry sitting around from when my back was really bad. Some is blankets and bedding from the end of last winter. Some just got stuck into closets or wherever. And there's always this week's dirty clothing.
Which to do first? The oldest, to get it out of the way? Or the recent stuff? Or, just for fun randomly pick some bags of laundry and see what goodies I end up with?
I can do a little at a time now. Need to carry down two flights of stairs, take to car in parking lot, drive to laundromat, wash/dry, reload car, drive, park in lot, carry to apartment entrance, carry back up stairs.
Or, just keep ignoring it and wait for the laundry fairy to wave that magic wand!

Which do you need more? Since it's getting colder (depending on where you live) maybe the blankets and bedding would be the most useful? Or are you running low on clothes?

I would say that you should wash whatever you need for the next week (or however long you can go between visits to the laundromat), and then fit in some of the items that are in the way the most -- like, is there a closet that you would like to use for its proper purpose, if only you could get the old laundry out of it?

When I have been in a situation such as yours - whether it's laundry, papers, dishes, etc. - I keep up with the current and add in some of the old. Sooner or later you will be caught up! Just think about it. Let's say you had all of your counters covered in dirty dishes and didn't know where to begin - just as you are feeling now with the clothes. If you washed all of the dishes that were used today and added a couple of the old dirty dishes, soon your counters would be clear! Works with papers and piles of anything. If you have surfaces covered with piles of misc., focus on not adding anything new to the pile. Whatever you are using today gets put away today. While you are putting away today's stuff, pick up 2 things from the pile and put those where they belong as well. Try it. It works! I promise! By the way, doing laundry is the best time to discard soiled/torn clothing. And have a box in your laundry area where you can place donations of too big, too small, don't like anymore. Try to reduce the amount of clothing being kept and that will automatically eliminate piles of the unused.

Caring, that's a great way to do it. As someone who doesn't hate laundry, but has learned to avoid it for a long time (flashbacks of former dark dank basement)... I can use all the tips and ideas.
Right now I have a mountain of clean clothes to purge, but I also have a closetful of musty clothes that haven't seen the light of day for a year or two. It is one of those crammed to the gills closets full of mostly clothing and linen and tablecloths, but also knickknacky stuff from former stash and grabs. I think if I were to take one or two items from that closet and add it to my regular laundry that your idea would definitely work.
I shall tell you how it goes.

Thank you for all the ideas!
This is how life works:
It got very cold after a lot of mild weather, so I decided to wash some blankets. A dear friend let me use her washer so I washed one of the quilts, put it in her dryer, put another quilt in the washer.
Went to take the first blanket out of the dryer, and discovered that the dryer belt (?) had broken, the dryer didn't turn. I felt awful at breaking her dryer - she called to get it fixed, but it'll take a while. Fortunately she's a good enough friend that she'll let me contribute to the repair - I'll buy her dinner.
So now I have two wet blankets in the back of my car. It's been really cold so the blankets are frozen! When I get stronger I'll take them to the laundromat.
I'll give you more updates as they happen. The plan is to do the most recent laundry next . . .
