The "making a home" part is right up my alley. It's the chucking and not looking back that is tough --
1. Color!!
2. Art!!
3. Books
4. Pictures!!
5. comfort!!
If you have lamps, keep them low -- that is -- low in height -- where you place them -- the light is more comfortable that way.
even one real plant helps the space. a few is good.
real flowers when you can get them.
throw them out when they die -- they are meant to be temporary.
Do you know art much? have a favorite artist? Need a suggestion?
prints by matisse are wonderful -- you can cut something out of a magazine and put it in a cheap frame and put it up -- it will look good.
You have the chance to start with a vision -- If you look through a few home or design mags (try the library or a bookstore) -- and see which KIND of interiors speak to you -- then you have a direction to go in.
What is your favorite color? fiances?
I used to know a married woman who made everything in her house pink and ruffled -- no great surprise there wasn't a lot of sizzle in her relationship, if you get my drift.
This is the fun part!!
One suggestion -- make the bed every day, every day, every day. even if it's just to straighten the quilt.
You deserve an oasis, an island of clarity and sanity. and that's it.
you can pick a spread that you LOVE.
as much as you can, put things that you LOVE around you. it will feel like home.

amyece, there are so many good suggestions and tips already given by these wise and experienced people. you have to find your own way of what works for you, but consistency in every day action is key. you might ask yourself some questions: what is the payoff in staying as you are? what are the risks? what do you truly want? what do you think is getting in the way of that? (habits, stress reactions, etc.) what is scary about change? on a more practical level: what is not working about my laundry system? how can i make it more workable? what motivates me to action? when am i most clear headed? (best for sorting/organizing) how can i make use of the space in this room better? what bothers me about this room? what in here do i truly love? what do i hate, dislike, or not use? etc etc any clear areas in your home, maintain and defend them! that means hang up your coat when you walk in the door, put away groceries right away and fold the bag (talking to myself here too! ), put away what you take out, clean the dishes (or load into dishwasher) after every meal, etc. if you are a flinger/thrower/dropper, like i am, realize that every thing thrown on the floor, flung on a chair, dropped at your feet will be that much harder to pick up and put away if you keep doing it! so stop doing it! do you have too many clothes, sheets, towels? sort through them and get rid of what you don't wear and use. any obvious trash around? start there and clear it! hopey's suggestions about making a home are spot-on. it doesn't take much. a few well-thought-out things that are lovely to the eye. you're here because you want to act. realize that this is not just a deadline to work toward; this is a lifestyle change you need, and nothing less. you can't slack and go back to your old ways after the wedding if you want the marriage to work; you want new ways to be, think, live, and new habits take lots and lots of practice. learn to do your part now before school starts again. you have a little time to start implementing new habits. start today. if you feel resistant or get discouraged, get on this board and post on listzilla or do chat challenges. put some inspiring quotes around to help you motivate. good music helps. think of the life you WANT, not the life you have, and keep that always in your mind while you work. also, what dj says. talk this over with him. include each other and come up with some clear cut guides so you can stay peaceful in the relationship. he sounds good, and you seem to love him. good for you to want to tackle this now while you are young. it's much easier then! hugs, cc

Here's a site for when you're ready that shows pictures of many different styles of rooms. I just finished looking at the pix of living rooms, and found three or four that I could adapt to my taste. It's from the Coastal Living Magazine site. www.coastalliving.com/and another: www.myhomeideas.com/decorating/50-living-room-ideas-00400000061600/cm/I looove looking at decorating sites. I just can't figure out where they store all their stuff! (Oh yeah, they probably don't have as much stuff as me. Ooops...time to weed through it all yet again.)
